Homemade Taffy

August 9th, 2011

I have an interesting relationship with taffy. It’s not one of my favorite candies (like this or this), but there’s something about the chewy confections that makes me unbelievably nostalgic. It reminds me of old fashioned candy shops in San Francisco and the delight of uncovering the flavors inside each wax wrapper. This past weekend we decided to make a batch ourselves (from this recipe). It was labor intensive (your arms will get a serious workout) and frustrating (sticky, scalding candy isn’t exactly easy to work with), but ultimately homemade taffy is worth the effort.

  2. I love making homemade candy – like lollipops and caramels. A lot of people can cook and bake, but candy make…that’s a whole other ballgame!

    I’ll definitely try this sometime.

  8. I love taffy too. Recently, I was shopping with my boyfriend at this great international/gourmet market, and when we got to the counter I realized that all I was buying was a box of steel cut oats and a bag of peppermint taffy. I said, “How weird, is this? One super healthy thing and one totally junky thing,” and my boyfriend goes, “Huh. I was just thinking they were both things old people eat.” So I suppose now I should add oatmeal and taffy to the list of cliche things old people like that I also really, really like – along with knitting and gin rummy.

  9. Yummy…!

  12. I recently had my first taffy. The taste was fine, but I was more impressed with all the different cute colors. It would be a great home decoration in a glass vase or jar.
