Homemade Pop-Tarts

May 10th, 2011

When I was little, I struggled with slumber parties. I loved the idea of sleeping away from home, curled up in blankets watching movies with friends, but I rarely made it through the night. Once everyone went to bed, I’d tiptoe to the phone and, in between muffled whimpers, I’d ask my dad to come pick me up. And he always did.

It wasn’t until later in elementary school that I discovered the benefits of not going home. Whereas our pantry was stocked with gems like All Bran and Cheerios, friends’ cupboards were filled with sugary treats that were acceptable to eat for breakfast. That’s when I first fell in love with Pop-Tarts.

Since then, they’ve lost a bit of their appeal as I find the pastry bland, the insides overly sweet and often times they’re stale. Yesterday I made my own, using this recipe in three variations (apricot, chocolate and cinnamon brown-sugar), and all of the thrills of childhood slumber parties came rushing back in the form of a simple pastry.

  1. I absolutely LOVE this post. We never really had anything fun like pop tarts (or anything else) in our home growing up except occasionally we’d get cool ranch (always cool ranch) doritos. I adore this idea bc even though it’s not technically “healthy” it’s definitely better than whatever it is that pop tarts in a box are. not to mention more fun! this is a great idea for something to make with kids. I’m going to save it:)

  13. Hi Emily! What a great post – as an elementary age girl, I also was “victim” to a cabinet full of Chex, but my girlfriend Rachelle always had Poptarts (chocolate). I’m sure she wondered why I never wanted to have the sleepover at my house!

  16. My very first sleepover I was so excited but too anxious to sleep and I wanted to go home. Luckily, my friend grabbed a package of mini pop-tarts (ahhh the 90s) and we munched on those tasty treats and giggled until I was comfortable enough to sleep. So funny you had a similar experience of poptarts and sleepovers!
