Homemade Granola

January 19th, 2011

I like the idea of granola, but often find the texture stale, and the flavors cloying and artificial.  I’ve wanted to bake some from scratch for quite some time, but I wasn’t convinced that it could make that much of a difference.  I was wrong.  I followed a simple recipe (here)* that promised great results, yet I was still amazed at just how well it came out.  The nuts added a hearty crunch and the coconut flakes gave it just the right amount of sweetness and texture to make it the most perfect breakfast/snack/ice cream/yogurt topping ever.

*I omitted the raisins (I prefer fresh berries) and added 2 tsp. of cinnamon and 1 tsp. of vanilla.

  2. That’s probably way healthier than store bought. Have you ever seen the sugar contents in the store bought sheesh it’s crazy. Only we could make healthy food unhealthy.

  3. I’ve made alton browns granola! it was my first homemade granola attempt as well…excellent recipe!! chock full of nuts and the coconut is definitely a must even though you might not necessarily think so!

  19. I highly recommend sub-ing out the oil for coconut oil. It is healthier for you and makes it taste wonderful!

  20. I’ve made this granola before, and it was great, but it had WAY too many nuts for my taste. Unless you really like nuts, I would use half of the nuts suggested. Emily, I LOVE your blog, your style is amazing.

  21. Homemade granola is about a million times better than the store bought stuff. Yours is delicious, of course!

  22. I have trouble eating yogourt because of the texture, so I have always loved the idea of putting granola in it. But every granola I buy seems really fattening, or has too many nuts in it! I never even thought about homemade granola! I love the idea, though :) Definately trying this out.

  26. Idk what brands of granola you’ve tried but you ought to try Quakers Oats Natural Granola! It’s awesome, and I love it! I would probably say my next fave granola is Bearnaked Vanilla & Almond flavor, but like you said about artificial flavors, the flavor is a bit artificial, and I don’t really like the texture…

  27. There’s nothing like a tasty homemade treat! This would also be a great gift if you filled a clear cello bag and tied a cute ribbon, or if you put the granola in a mason jar with some gingham fabric under the lid. Check out my year-round gift-giving guide at http://www.thepresentperfect.com!

  28. I was just going on and on yesterday about how amazing homemade granola is! I Made my first batch this past summer and have only bought one package since. Once you know the possibilities and deliciousness, the packaged stuff just doesn’t do it justice!

  29. MMmm I love granola with greek yogurt and honey. I totally agree with Mimsy on the Bearnaked granola, it’s great.

  30. As much as I like fresh berries with granola, I like to make granola with dried cherries and semisweet chocolate chips. So Yummy!

  31. Mmmm, looks amazing !

  32. Yum! My mom’s made granola ever since I can remember, so I’ve always hated the store-bought variety. Never tried it with berries though, I’ll have to remember for next time.

  33. looks so good! and so healthy!! thanks for the recipe, will have to try this treat =)

  37. I am crazy for granola! I make it a lot at home and have found a healthy substitute for oil is non-sweetened apple sauce! I also omit unnatural sugar and substitute with a combo of honey and maple syrup. The rest is about the same as your tasty recipe with the cinnamon and vanilla to kick up the flavor!

  38. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been searching for the perfect granola recipe.

  39. Alright, this looks terrific! I have to agree…everytime I want the granola experience I remember from my childhood, I am disappointed by the store-bought bran…keeping granola fresh is probably as simple as making it and eating it all when you have it fresh…

I have to make this now…I thought those days were lost forever!
