Homemade Graham Crackers

January 12th, 2011

When I first went away to college, I went a little crazy with the junk food.   It was the first time I had ever gone grocery shopping for myself and I was ecstatic when I realized that I could buy whatever I wanted.   I grew up eating really healthy food (in a home where dessert was often a sliced apple), but soon began buying graham crackers in bulk.*  They’ve always been one of my favorite snacks; they’re sweet, but not overly so, and I love that you can eat them on their own or with a big dollop of peanut butter.  Yesterday I made them from scratch (using this recipe) and while they tasted great, there’s just something about the original that can’t be beat.

*Sound indulgent?   It was.  My graham cracker consumption, in addition to daily donuts, ice cream, pizza and beer (and a complete lack of exercise) resulted in the Freshman 15 20.

  2. Yum!

I know all about the freshman 20. Darn you, small delivery pizzas that are only slightly larger (okay way larger) than a personal pan!!

  3. a simple snack but so delicious, especially on a cold night with a cup of hot tea. i’m inspired to try these although i’m not going to pressure myself into thinking they can turn out as perfect as yours.
(love the sparkly nails too) ;)

  4. Such cute pics! I would have never thought to make homemade graham crackers. Oh, and I’m right there with you w/ the Freshman 20. My friends now look at my pics from college and cant believe I ever weighed that much lol.

  6. I had a similarly healthy upbringing and a similarly “rebellious” experience when I went to college…I recall my first sip of Mountain Dew and my first slice of frozen pizza, foods that were banned when I was growing up. Great post :)

  7. Just think how awesome these would be used as smores. Sounds like a fondue party just waiting to happen.

  8. Those graham crackers look picture perfect.

  9. They look more beautiful than the originals, though! I couldn’t have them in the house. I’m so good at avoiding most sweets, but I love, love, love graham crackers with peanut butter.

  10. Haha, I could see how that would be tempting… That glass of milk looks so refreshing!

  19. Haha I gained 20 pounds my freshman year as well! I remember coming home for spring break and my dad thought I was pregnant and told the whole family he was worried! Ahhh… well I lost it since but I totally wouldn’t mind gaining it back if it meant I got to munch on graham crackers like the ones you made all day! Great idea!

  21. I love that you took the extra time to score each one with a fork. You have become such a good baker, seriously. I’m pretty sure I gained a freshman 10 or so, too, but now I would kill to be back at that weight! Five more weeks till I can start dieting… patience, patience:)

  40. I love making homemade graham crackers, though mine don’t turn out as pretty as yours! They are so much better than store bought in my opinion (but I agree that they don’t taste like the boxed ones either, and sometimes you just have to have them!)

  41. definetely ill try the recipe, its summer here (time to get healthy)
    ps: looove the nails!

  42. Had to laugh out loud… My freshman ’20′ (ahem) was due to a meal card and a serious love for Haagen Dazs Ice Cream bars. I’ve been getting back to making simple things from scratch as well and they are just so much better!
