Homemade Cheez-Its

February 13th, 2013

cheez-it1

When I was younger, a trip to the grocery store with my mom was always a welcomed challenge. Each aisle was a new opportunity to convince her of things I needed: sugary “fruit” drinks, granola bars packed with chocolate chips – I had a creative spin for every kind of junk food. Cheez-Its were a perennial snack that I’d try to sneak into the cart, even though they’re packed with a long list of ingredients that are nearly impossible to pronounce. Last week I decided to make them from scratch (recipe here) – and loved that I already had everything I needed to whip up a batch. The difference in flavor was profound – they tasted like actual cheese, had a buttery finish, and a crisp exterior that made them seriously addictive. They lacked the artificial flavor I adored as a kid, but they’ve instantly become a go-to snack anytime we host game nights.

I’ve been wanting to try this recipe for a while. My favorite snack in high school was Cheez-Its and pink lemonade. They don’t taste as good on their own without the other!

Those look incredible. I am so lazy. I am always looking for a replacement I can buy in the store and here you are ….

    Very cool.

  • Carrie

I think it is incredibly dishonest that your link to this recipe is simply to another page on your own site, when it is not your own. This is clearly an attempt to obtain extra page views, but it is very unfair to the true creator of this recipe.

    • anon

She clearly has FROM better home and gardens on her recipe link. I doubt she is trying to gain page views from haters like you.

      • Justine Marks

I agree with Carrie….I still cannot stand that she links to her own page…and therefore the true creator of the recipe does not get the direct link….I think it is tasteless…and her explanation for why she does it is self-serving.

This is honestly way too awesome.

What an amazing post! I never thought you could make homemade cheez its. I’ve done marshmallows but that’s as far as I’ve gotten! I love the extra step you took to poke holes in them AND the clever photo with Scrabble at the end.

Emily, it’s very shady the way you claim these recipes as your own (even if you do so by omission). In the main post, you in no way reference the source of the recipe, and your recipe link takes you to another C&C page where you have ripped off the recipe verbatim. I think that’s a sneaky way to blog.

    • Roberta Whittiker

I totally disagree. The link clearly shows the recipe is from Better Homes and Gardens. Me thinks thou doth protest too much.

    • Charlie

Well said Lauren & Carrie, I agree with you. It’s a shame that the link in your post didnt go straight to the original recipe. As it was simply cut & pasted you are taking traffic away from their site and misleading your readers at the same time. I enjoy your blog but I bet you wouldnt like your original ideas to be misrepresented by other bloggers in this way.

      • Justine Marks

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I just feel it is so incredibly self-serving. She says that it is to make it more streamlined and clean….yes it is super clean now, but now super plagiarized in a sneaky way….no credit given to the true creators of the recipes. If she creates these recipes herself, then all power to her to link to her own page…but even with the “source by” on the page, she is linking to her own page and “stealing” from the source. She says that others have copied her and not credited her either, but that does not give her the right to do it to others in this way.

    Those must be amazing!
I’ll give them a try when I feel like cooking!!

where did you get the cookie cutter? Can you post it by the recipe please? also, about how long is the shelf life of these, I’m sure not long because all the ingredients are fresh and without the preservatives but do you think they’d last for 1-3 days? or a little longer, should they be refrigerated?

    Thank you!

OMG thank you so much for posting this. Cheeze it’s are one of my guilty pleasures. Basically if I buy a box, it’s hard not to eat in one sitting, there is something addicting about that salty fake flavor. And yes they are HORRIBLE for you. I will need to try these out soon! Can’t wait!
