High Hat

June 25th, 2008

Sometimes I feel as though every trend is taken to the extreme when it comes to L.A.  As soon as gladiator sandals became popular, outrageous versions snaked up women’s thighs all over town.  And take skinny jeans, for example.  While this style does no favors for the majority of women who wear them, we continue to pour ourselves into the tapered legs, hoping they’ll look the same on us as they do on Mary-Kate.  But, my favorite illustration, of course, is the fedora.  While it’s a very practical accessory, these little hats have completely inundated the city.  Though I’ve never thought I could pull off this look, I much prefer the simple straw, instead of the gray or flannel versions.  The picture of Michelle Williams is my favorite I’ve seen, with her relaxed dress and plain ballet flats.  As always, dELiA’s has a fantastically uncomplicated version, that even I’m swooning over.  For only $19.50, the Evelyn Straw Fedora will make for the perfect pool companion, with a black grosgrain ribbon and just the right amount of coverage.

I think the straw versions are better, too. I’ve only spotted one up here but trends always take a while to catch on here.

Hey bub! How are you? I actually just saw a straw fedora at a local vintage store. I’m torn between going back to get it or to just leave it, I just adore Michelle’s in that photo – so chic!

    Hope you’re well, love!

I do think they look lovely but as ever I sort of shy away from something when it gets everywhere! I agree Michelle Williams gets the thumbs up but I’m sticking with my same summer hat of no description at all other than quite 70s and YSL inspired.

It has been so hot here this week that I cannot seriously think of wearing a hat *lol* That said, I like Michelle’s fedora very much, and you are right about it – definitely becoming a hit.

I really go off stuff when it becomes too mainstream, but I still want a straw trilby SO badly. It’s one of those magic items that I think will instantly go with everything I own

That has always been my pet peeve with L.A. fashion. Once something catches on, it starts to spread like wildfire (irony). With the fedoras, I think of Ms. Spears for some reason. She might have killed it for some of the women out there.

I’ve been lusting after a straw feroda recently too. I was thinking of buying one from a cheap store seeing as they all seem to look the same, but the one you’ve chosen looks particularly nice!
I think I would feel like an idiot in one though haha
