Grilled Perfection

Fridays tend to be particularly slow in my office, which is why several co-workers and I ventured over to Culver City to try out Meltdown. I’ve been hearing rave reviews for a while about this sandwich shop that specializes in fun variations of grilled cheese, which sounded right up my alley. I decided on the turkey melt, that came with brie, oven-roasted turkey, arugula and a cranberry-horseradish mustard on sourdough. Of course, we also had to try the nutella and banana sandwich on egg bread for dessert, which was just plain sinful. For that reason alone, I cannot keep nutella in my house, since I always end up spoon-feeding myself from the jar at unacceptable hours of the night.   What I did realize from this experience is how much I love the idea of places that specialize in just one type of food.  During my trip to New York last Fall, I stumbled upon Pommes Frites, a tiny little restaurant that serves french fries with about 50 different dipping sauces and I’ve been craving it ever since.  I wonder how prominent these kinds of eateries are, which is why I ask my loyal readers:

-Have you eaten at a place that specializes in one type of food?  If so, what kind?

-What type of food would you be most excited about if it were to be the focus of a restaurant?

yummy! that looks delicious! i would LOVE to have a place like that here. and i totally agree with you: places that only serve one type of food tend to do this kind very, very good. we have a pasta bar here that i just adore. you choose from around 25 different shapes of pasta, and then you choose one of their many sauces. if you want to, you cann add extra ingredients like shrimps or tuna. very tasty!

I haven’t been to any restaurant like this, or none I can remember, but that sounds so fantastic! Brie! Yumm, I really wish I could try that.

I love tapas bars. There are a bunch in NYC that offer affordable Spanish-inspired plates & wines by the glass. Xunta comes to mind… Am also a fan of specialty dessert places, like Pinkberry; Cold Stone Creamery; Magnolia Bakery for cupcakes (as I have a wicked sweet tooth). Smooches! CC

The pomme frites place gave me so many good memories with friends and everything. I remember we would walk down the streets with each of us holding a bag and wouldn’t stop eating! or squeezing in our own little corner in that tiny place. thanks for the nice post

I went to a couple places in Japan that specialized in certain types of food. I would love to see a place focusing on curry–I love it and every time I go to a restraunt that has it I try a different kind. Yum!

Oh evil lol! Those sandwiches look so good!! Pommes Frites also sounds amazing…50 dipping sauces? Wow! Hope you’re having a great weekend dear :)

I like a French restaurant that specializes in offering many kinds of pancakes – sweet as well as salty. It offers some other kinds of food, too, even if limited to some basics. I love it, it is one of my favorite places.
Oh, and I’ve been to a restaurant that’s called Fischerhaus, i.e. Fish Restaurant, which offers only fish, nothing else, not even seafood. Also very nice:)

Very unfair to attack me with pictures of delicious looking food, particularly as I havent eaten breakfast yet!! That food looks delicious. There’s a cafe near my work which makes the best grilled paninis, my favourite has pizza sauce in it with mozerella and ham =)

27 silje { 06.15.08 at 5:32 am }

That looks divine! Such great food. I love places that just serves desserts(!). Good burgers are another, and I LOVE anything sushi.

28 Belowen { 06.15.08 at 5:54 am }

They look amazing! All I can think of where specialised-restaurants are concerned are curry houses and noodle houses, but even they have a wide range of food! I did go to a pancake restaurant once, with loads of different savory and sweet fillings. Yum. I love the sound of Pomme Frites!

32 erika { 06.15.08 at 4:43 pm }

thanks for your comment, sweetie.
every time I come to your blog, I crave cupcakes.. ;)

oh my favorite restaurant is anything Chinese, I adore Chinese food. We frequent this local little hole in the wall that has the most superb honey chicken and fried tofu with fried won tons and crab/cream cheese inside. YUM! We both eat lunch for less than $15!

34 Jessie { 06.15.08 at 6:01 pm }

YUUUUMMMMMM! That sandwich looked amazing (and I have GOT to try and make the dessert version you mentioned).

I am definitely looking out for Pommes Frites next time I am in NYC… french fries are my favorite indulgence! The first place that came to mind for a specialty restaurant was this place here in KC called Pot Pie. It is really really good, and although they are known for their namesake, they also have really great quiche and also grilled cheeses!

35 Pamcasso { 06.15.08 at 8:30 pm }

I’m highly obsessed with pizza, so pizza shops make me pretty excited. the pomme frites sound delish though!

36 Jessie Cacciola { 06.16.08 at 11:28 am }

that looks SO good. i once went to a restaurant called Mustard — very cute, and surprisingly chic. but the menu wasn’t exclusively mustard, thank god! Quinoa has amazing versatility, so i think that would be an interesting ingredient to highlight. great post!

ooooh I am so hungry then I see this picture.

One of my favorite specialty shops is up in Corning, California. It’s called Olive Pit and it has hundreds of different flavored olives. I can’t say I’ve driven all the way up there just for the olives, but it’s a great place to stop on the way to Seattle.

While chocolate was the first item to come to mind as the focus of a restaurant, I can’t quite wrap my mind around how that could work. So, I’ll go with raw fish, and fortunately for me there are already a ton of sushi restaurants around. Great questions!

39 Fashion's Darling { 06.16.08 at 8:54 pm }

that looks delish! I’m obsessed with grilled cheese- my friends are slightly disgusted by that.

but I love all sorts of food…spanish, indian, thai- you name it. But I get really excited for-you read?- IHOP! I know weird but the thought of eating breakfast at like 4 and its ok…makes me happy!

40 Carrie { 06.17.08 at 1:56 pm }

I have never thought of putting brie on a grilled sandwich, but that sounds heavenly. I should really experiment more with my grilled cheese!

41 Grom { 07.24.08 at 4:33 pm }

Downtown, there’s a place called Cereality that specializes in cereal. They even do what I did as a kidlet and pick all the marshmellows out of Lucky Charms :D
