Good Morning, Baltimore

baltimore.jpg

I just returned from a whirlwind trip to Baltimore, where I indulged in multiple crab cakes, an Orange Crush (a local drink), loads of seafood and some Derby pie (kind of like a massive chocolate chip cookie).  The weather was lovely and I couldn’t get enough of their cobblestone streets, preppy boutiques and salty air.  Don’t you just love when you’re pleasantly surprised by a city?

Aw, these pictures make me miss Baltimore so much (I lived there several years ago)! I need to go back for a visit.

So glad you enjoyed Baltimore! I currently live in Baltimore (Federal Hill) and I think it’s great too :) Crab cakes and football, that’s what Maryland’s all about!!!

Baltimore looks so beautiful! I don’t think I’ve ever been. And, even if I have, it was clearly years ago and I need to return. You captured some great shots…I somehow just noticed the ELVIS and LIVES have the same letters. Spooky!

i still haven’t experienced baltimore… i need to! especially if they have good crab cakes!

you look lovely in that last photo too!

Love the incredible brick building with shutters! And the photo of the ties is so colorful and vibrant! Discovering a new city is the greatest feeling - especially if you love it!

10 Sal { 06.24.09 at 7:16 am }

Sounds charming … and I could go for a Derby pie right about now!

11 Lexie { 06.24.09 at 7:18 am }

12 Meghan { 06.24.09 at 7:20 am }

I love Baltimore, too! Thanks for sharing the great photos. I definitely felt the same way about San Diego when I visited last year!

13 Lindsay { 06.24.09 at 7:32 am }

I was born and raised in Baltimore…it’s nice to see someone enjoying our little Charm City! (We get a bad rap what with The Wire, high crime rates, etc.) Looks like you had a lovely time :)

14 L { 06.24.09 at 7:40 am }

Living in D.C., I’d always heard terrible things about Baltimore - dirty, dangerous, and void of fun. But I, too, have been pleasantly surprised. I love Fell’s Point, Federal Hill, and my favorite ballpark, Camden Yards. I’m glad you saw the good in B-more, too. :)

15 TheBeautyFile { 06.24.09 at 7:51 am }

I’ve never been there either! Cobblestone streets do it for me every time…I love that picture of the ties…& your gold watch totally matches your hair!

16 Angela { 06.24.09 at 7:59 am }

Ew. Baltimore is not so nice when you live there. Glad you had a nice time though.

17 Arlynn from Fleur De-Licious { 06.24.09 at 8:19 am }

Baltimore is lovely & so are those ties; the Hubs would just love that little lobster one : - )

Glad you enjoyed your time away!

18 Candice { 06.24.09 at 8:24 am }

Baltimore is my very favorite city (after NYC, my hometown fave). I’m glad you enjoyed it; it’s a really wonderful place.

19 City Girl { 06.24.09 at 8:29 am }

I live in Washington, DC and always have fun when I visit Baltimore. Hopefully next time you are on the East Coast you can enjoy NYC and WDC as well :)

20 catie { 06.24.09 at 8:31 am }

i grew up in western maryland so baltimore is the nearest thing to fun i had growing up. i absolutely love it there and if i didn’t live in NYC, i would live there. I’m obsessed with the aquarium, the cheesiness of Powerplant (tacky nightclub zone), Charm City Cakes (my future wedding cake provider), crab cakes (duh, it’s MD, they have the best crab cakes there!), bertha’s mussels, and an amazing music & alternative lifestyle place. I agree - Bmore (BALMURR, as we call it too) gets a bad rap (dirty, crime-y), but it’s authentic, chill, and not pretentious (something i miss). I’m happy you we “pleasantly surprised”…you definitely didn’t seem so psyched about it in your previous posts!

21 dottieb { 06.24.09 at 8:39 am }

Nice to see you had a great time here…next time you’re in town, let me know…I’ll give you the scoop on all the good spots!

23 diana { 06.24.09 at 9:05 am }

oooh, i love inner harbor. so nice. i have been there a lot. glad you had a nice time.

24 Maggie { 06.24.09 at 9:14 am }

I LOVE Baltimore! I am actually surprising my hubs with a trip in 2 weeks for his birthday. Would you mind e-mailing me a list of your favorite shops/restaurants to check out?! I hadn’t heard of Mamas on the Half Shell but that looks great!

25 Mark { 06.24.09 at 9:23 am }

Did you sneek into my wife’s sewing room and take a picture of her Stash? All of that fabric looks like the fabric that she uses for quilts and sewing 1860’s era dresses. I’m glad you enjoyed our city, it does break out of the misperceptions that people have of it. Did you get to explore eclectic Hampden?

26 Wanderlusting { 06.24.09 at 9:32 am }

Yes, I do love being suprised. You don’t hear enough about Baltimore - in my opinion - and those oyster houses are enough to make me want to go. Looks lovely, will have to go one day (can’t wait to hit up the East Coast).

PS your last post made me have Mexican last night, lol

27 Rosemary { 06.24.09 at 9:39 am }

That mermaid sign is adorable! And those fabrics are so charming–are they ties or scarves or belts or?

47 Becky { 06.24.09 at 5:40 pm }

So glad you liked Baltimore! It doesn’t have the best reputation, but there are lots of hidden gems. You should swing by DC next time you’re over here — very different vibe, but also wonderful.

48 Chelsea { 06.24.09 at 7:56 pm }

Derby Pie? Sounds like my perfect dessert!

53 ShopKim { 06.25.09 at 5:57 am }

I’m so glad you liked our little city! It certainly has it’s great points. Nacho Mama’s is one of the best Mexican restaurants EVAH! I’m glad you got some nice weather too - that certainly maked the walking around and exploring easier.

54 Melliebay { 06.25.09 at 7:07 am }

So glad you enjoyed it! Orange Crushes are the best! I live in Fells Point, a block away from the pier, and I absolutely love this city!

55 Kristin { 06.25.09 at 7:39 am }

I adore Baltimore. I was actually there this weekend for work as well. I was born there, and just kind of hung out there throughout a few years(while I dated an Oriole). I love it there. It’s very cute.

56 Michelle { 06.25.09 at 9:21 am }

58 stephanie h { 06.25.09 at 11:21 am }

Great pictures of Baltimore! I’ve never been, but my sister lives only a few minutes away. How humid was it there? I went to Orlando and it’s just killer. Everywhere on the east coast is so humid (and I’m so used the to SoCal dry heat). Glad you had a fabulous time!

59 Diana { 06.25.09 at 12:09 pm }

baltimore is such a fantastic city - so much to do and see and eat! :)

I recently visited Baltimore too and was likewise pleasantly surprised! Great people, good food and a very cute harbor district. I didn’t find those cute boutiques though… jealous!

How good was that Orange Crush?! I hope you enjoyed your forray into East Coast culture! I’m a Delaware gal, work in Philly, weekend at the beach, and have (too much) family in Bmore. Take trips out here more often! You’d be surprised by how breezy life here is!
