Since G and I work together all day, every day, in addition to our married status and co-parenting of a little human, the ability to connect as a couple beyond work or Sloan is very important to us. We savor our date nights, but rarely go out, unless my folks are in town. The rest of the time, we're somewhat stuck in the house, lovingly and gladly beholden to a baby whose bedtime is 6 p.m. We often struggle with dinner, and it's far too easy to let our weeks become a lazy blur of takeout and TV without much romance or effort.

We've now gotten in the habit of turning one night a week into an at-home date night, where we cook together. After putting Sloan to bed, G will make me a Manhattan or a martini, and we'll tackle a new meal. There's something sweet about bonding in the kitchen, sharing the tasks involved with a recipe, with the smell of olive oil and garlic simmering on the stove, while our baby sleeps soundly nearby. We've designated our Blue Apron delivery as our usual date night, which typically happens on Wednesday. Taking the guesswork out of what to make sets up the evening on a great note and since everything comes portioned out, we don't have to spend a ton of time prepping. This artisanal pizza took less time to make than placing an order for delivery, and the sweet potato mixed with the fontina and fresh arugula was a unique and delicious combo.

I now genuinely look forward to our weekly delivery, and will prairie-dog up from my desk multiple times on Wednesday to have G remind me what's arriving. We'll go through the recipe before falling into our natural kitchen roles (G does most of the knife-work since he doesn't trust me to use the right knife for the right task). When the meal is finished, it's fun to enjoy the result of our teamwork, having broken up the monotony of the week without leaving the house.
