Five Things

March 2nd, 2012

{Late afternoon bubble bath + Estee Lauder’s Hot Coral Nail polish}

Yesterday afternoon I did something unheard of; I shut off. I put away all of my electronics – my computer, iPhone, iPad, iEverything and didn’t look at them again until this morning. Over the holidays, my parents repeatedly said that my fiancé and I always seemed to be attached to our phones – whether we were relaxing by the fire or waiting in line at a restaurant. At the time, I brushed it off as one of those technological things they just didn’t understand, but I’m starting to realize that they were right. I find the busier I am, the less I’m able to actually detach – even when it’s really necessary. So here’s to a weekend filled with spending time with friends (not on Facebook), sending handwritten notes (not text messages), and taking in the first signs of spring (not through Instagram).

    Well done.. Being able to realize how important it is to keep up with the world, fun, friends, & life, without our ‘tech aids,’ is crucial :)
    Love the coral color on you.

    Absolutely love these five things! Especially the coral toes. It’s cold up here in Seattle, but I should get back to painting my toes. Even if it’s only for me to see. It’s worth it.

    I’m liking the presence of the deep orange/red colours in your 5 things. A tech shutdown sounds like a good idea – one I am in dire need of. I swear the dependence on it affects the wiring in our brains…

    I had to come back to this post to comment because i’d been thinking about it since first reading it– it’s so crazyyy to me how connected we’ve become to our smart devices. I constantly find myself having to remind myself to temp. “tune out” in favour of honouring my real life company with respect. I mean, obviously working online and as blogger, makes it part of what we do inherently so there’s a limit to how much we can feasibly disconnect. These days i find I’m sometimes more interested in documenting my present moment in the interest of my followers, than sometimes obliging my present company with my attention. And how crazy is that? Technology has made it so easy for us, I’m constantly multi tasking real life and online via my phone etc… Here’s to the attempt of a more balanced approach ;)

  • http://www.magz725.blogspot.com Maggie

    Such fresh and pretty photos! :) How I would have to try those blood orange mimosa!

  • Laura

    Love this 5 things… it is definitely important to step away from the technology every now and then! My parents always give me a hard time for being attached to my phone too. Its sad but I’ve realized I can’t even watch a movie without playing on my phone! On an unrelated note, I was wondering– do you think you could do maybe a monthly post like your Christmas wish-lists? Just things you’ve seen/want/love/etc. Was searching for birthday presents and thinking how much I wish you did wish lists more frequently! Five things are great, but I would love a longer post on things you’re loving currently!

    I love that you unplugged for an afternoon. I’ve been trying to do that more often, with one caveat- my Kindle doesn’t count! I want to take more time to soak in the bath or sit on the porch while reading a good book. I just bought a new book, too – “Reel Life” by Jackie Townsend (http://jackietownsend.com) so hopefully I’ll be more motivated to take the time out!
