Five Things

March 4th, 2011

{Decorations in the French Quarter}

Sometimes I feel like the only way I keep track of time is through my “Five Things” posts that remind me it’s Friday. This week has flown by particularly fast since we’ve been in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, enjoying everything this city has to offer. We’ve eaten incredible food, explored until our feet were blistered, and met so many kind, generous people. On tap this weekend: a Bloody Mary making contest, performances by Better Than Ezra, parade-watching, tracking down some authentic Po’ boys, and finding fun souvenirs to bring home.

{Beignets with Cafe Au Lait at Cafe Du Monde}

{The beautifully eerie Lafayette No. 1 Cemetery}

{Pralines from a local sweet shop}

{Trees littered with colorful beads along St. Charles Ave.}

    I just stumbled upon your blog a couple days ago and have read through the entire archive of posts. I’m sorry if that’s a little creepy, but I love the way you write and your posts definitely make me smile. I hope you have a wonderful time in New Orleans!

    @Laura a po’boy is a traditional submarine sandwich from Louisiana. It almost always consists of meat or seafood, usually fried, served on baguette-like Louisiana French bread.
    Well at least that is the Wikipedia definition.
    Down here we just call it a great sandwich especially if it has fried crawfish in it!

    New Orleans is tied as my fav US city along w/ NYC. I’m so jealous you’re getting to spend Mardi Gras there and eating all the fabulous grub too, especially the beignets!

    Go to Domilise’s for authentic, blow-your-mind-delicious po-boys! It looks like a total hole in the wall, but I swear you won’t find a better sandwich anywhere in the world. Fried shrimp is my favorite! So glad you’re loving NOLA–there’s no place like it!

    If you want a beautiful background for your wardrobe shoots definitely go to Audobon Park, by far the most beautiful park I’ve been in. There is this HUGE Willow Tree that we used to call the Tree of Life. It’s a bit far in but so worth it.
    I miss New Orleans dearly.

    Everyone is wrong. The best po’ boys in New Orleans are at Verti Marte on Royal. Check out these Yelp reviews:

    Hi! I love your blog, and especially your weekly “Five Things,” but I think that even though you run a fashion blog, being in New Orleans right now is a great time to draw attention to some of the troubles that certain parts of the area are still facing. Thankfully, there is still glitz and glamour to New Orleans which has kept its economy afloat, but there are people over there who are still really suffering. You have the power to talk about that with all your followers!

  • http://www.ciaochessa.com Chessa!

    I love New Orleans so much. I’ve only been once – when we went for Jazz Fest four (gasp!) years ago. It was one of the most fun weekends of my life so far. enjoy!

    So close yet so far!! HB and I are driving east to Lake Charles tomorrow to spend a night at L’Auberge du Lac (Hotel & Casino). I love love love the French Quarter and have enjoyed many a beignet at Cafe Du Monde! Make sure to pick up a tin can of their famous coffee (w/ chicory!) and try not to get pestered by the pigeons! :) Wish we could meet up! Have a blast and make sure to have a good ol’ time at Pat O’Briens (at least I think I’m spelling that right…)

    I am so glad New Orleans is getting some national attention in recent years! Welcome to the big easy, I hope you have a great and safe time. I may be biased as a local, but I really think NOLA is one of the best places in the world, with truly genuine people. EVERYONE COME VISIT! Best food, people, and culture!
