Five Things

February 4th, 2011

{King Cake + beads + Mardi Gras invitation}

This week was made infinitely better when I received the above invite. I’ve always wanted to visit New Orleans, so when I was offered an opportunity to go for Mardi Gras, I couldn’t pass it up. I’m attending Better Than Ezra’s Krewe of Rocckus, which includes private viewing stands to watch parades (perfect for someone who isn’t a fan of massive crowds), excellent food and lots of great music. Until then, I’m looking forward to a low key weekend with a very Un-Superbowl Party with girlfriends that involves high tea and pretty dresses. And that’s way better than football and hot wings, in my opinion.

{Sweet Valentine’s Day-inspired notes left around the house}

{The pink peony that’s lasted all week on my bedside table}

{Vintage clothes galore at Shareen’s Vintage downtown L.A.}

{My new lacquered tray that now holds little odds and ends}

P.S. I’m nominated for the 2011 Bloglovin’ awards as a finalist for the Best Personal Style Blog.  I would absolutely love your support.  Please click here to cast your vote.

    I guarantee you won’t be disappointed with your Mardi Gras experience and take it from me, I’ve been going to parades since I was in the womb! Here are my dining recommendations:
    Jacques-Imo’s Cafe on Oak St.
    Mondo a Susan Spicer Restaurant on Harrison Ave.
    Galatoire’s on Bourbon St.
    King Cake from Haydel’s Bakery
    Oh and Bourbon St. is tourist central, if you’d like the real New Orleans Mardi Gras experience, stick around St. Charles Ave. and pick up a frozen margarita from Superior Grill!
    Happy Mardi Gras! Can’t wait to hear about your trip…

    That Valentine’s Day note looks perfect. Not only is it sweet, it is a good decoration, too. The pink flower in a white room is very nice as well – it brightens it up completely, doesn’t it?

    King Cake seems so tasty, and colorful. That is such an amazing opportunity you had. I always have wanted to see New Orleans. Good luck with the bloglovin contest!

    Rocckus is not a real krewe. You’re paying for an event with one of the worst local bands in existence. Make a trip for Krewe of Muses or Zulu, THAT’S Mardi Gras.

    Be sure to eat at Cochon when you’re there!

    I’d love to see a ‘what’s in my makeup bag’ or what’s in my purse post. I love seeing new makeup products that work for other people.

    I just stumbled onto your blog and I love it! And I am SO glad you are making it to NOLA for Mardi Gras!!!
    As a New Orleans resident I recommend:
    1. AVOID BOURBON STREET LIKE THE PLAGUE. It is just crowds of tourists. If you must go, get a hand grenade (mixed drink in neon green cups- you’ll see) and walk down it for one block. Then proceed to Frenchman St, which has the best live music and is where us locals go (go to Apple Barrel Bar, La Maison, D.B.A., etc. Seek WWOZ’s eternal wisdom for live music listings).
    2. Eat oysters at Casamento’s on Magazine, go to Ms. Mae’s next door for $2 drinks. Stroll down the rest of Magazine St. for the best shopping in NOLA. There is the area with American Apparel and Buffalo exchange, but the part close to Whole Foods (close to where Magazine instersects with Jefferson) has local shops.
    3. Take the St. Charles street car. The houses are absolutely amazing, and the street is shaded by wonderful oaks. Get off at the Columns Hotel and get a Pimm’s cup and drink it on the porch.
    4. Eat at Boucherie on Jeannette (uptown). I hate boudin balls, but I will eat them from Boucherie. Boucherie is the most affordable gourmet in town.
    5. Go see the Zulu parade, and try to get a coconut (the most prized catch of Zulu).
    Obviously, the two pasttimes of New Orleans are eating and drinking. have a wonderful time, post pictures of your time!!!

    HEY! Congrats on coming to NOLA! I’m a NOLA resident and if you need any suggestions on what to do/see and where the real locals have a good time then send me an email!

    Mardi Gras is awesome! I went for the first time last year in NOLA. Be prepared for heavy drinking in the streets and lots of skin

    I love Shareen’s! I visited there with Kelsie of Dedicated Follower of Fashion and looooved it. I bought a white fur jacket and a very red-riding-hood-esque navy blue cape with red satin lining. True treasures! I love that there are no boys allowed, isn’t that cute?!
