Five Things

mantle candle and tulips

{Pink tulips + a Valentine’s Day Rose/Baies candle}

On Monday I came down with the flu. The last time I had a fever I was in second grade, so I forgot just how miserable it is to be this sick. Most of the time I was either napping or staring at the ceiling – not even episodes of my favorite shows sounded appealing. But it seems I’m over the worst of it and am hopeful that I can start incorporating foods besides Popsicles and soup back into my diet. Here’s to a weekend filled with little luxuries and most importantly, your health.

black dominos

{Only Alexander Wang could make dominoes look so sleek}

Lukshon soup

{Cantonese Chicken Soup from Lukshon - essential flu fighting food}

python x bench

{The best splurge ever – traditional x-benches in an unexpected material from Jayson Home}

gold teeth with toothpaste

 {Luxurious toothpaste c/o of Theodent that’s pretty enough to leave out}

    Hey, I’m a dentist and I would definitely not recommend fluoride free toothpaste… Unless you want cavities . :|

    • Marci

      Hi Julie,
      It use rennou, which rivals fluoride. I was skeptical at first, but check it out!

    • http://www.theodent.com SoCalDentist

      Julie, Theodent is not just another fluoride free dentifrice. It contains a non-toxic alternative to fluoride called Rennou, that has a much greater capacity to remineralize enamel at significantly smaller concentrations.

    Love fresh tulips…but $99 for toothpaste…you can’t be serious?

  • M.

    $100 toothpaste? You are effing high.

    • SoCalDentist

      You’re right. $99 is a lot of pay for toothpaste, but this isn’t snake oil. In reality, you are probably already paying more than this for a similar treatment, not realizing it. When you go to the dentist, patients commonly receive an in-office one time fluoride treatment for about $80-$130 usually applied as a varnish, and it is commonly covered by insurance. Theodent 300 represents a pharmaceutical grade therapy with a similar and more dramatic effect and no toxicity concerns, that should have been mentioned on this blog. Not to mention, you get about 60-80 uses out of a tube a toothpaste, vs. the in-office one time treatment. I have reviewed independent research from the ADA verifying Theodent’s effect vs. a traditional fluoride treatment. Theodent also has a product called Theodent Classic, that only costs $10 and sold at Whole Foods Market, that has the same formulation with a less concentrated amount of their active ingredient, Rennou. I understand your skepticism, but let me assure you that this product is reasonably priced, and that you have been paying way more your whole life for a less impressive result.

    Emily. I came across your blog in 2010 and loved it. Our styles are completely different though, I’m more of a romantic/hippie/biker girl at heart and could not live in an apartment where everything is white-ish and minimalistic. But still, I loved your blog. The pictures were beautiful and I can appreciate other people’s style even though it’s the opposite of mine. It was the happy and fresh outlook you had I loved, I guess. But lately it hasn’t been the same. I looked forward to your ‘five things’ posts, because they were about the simple things in life, with the occasional splurge on lipsticks, shoes and so on. But now it is all about randomly showing off expensive things, like that toothpaste and those benches. I would never spend 99$ on a toothpaste, no matter how good it looks. I would perhaps spend 600$ on great benches, but that would be a ‘treat’ for my home, not everything needs to be expensive to look good. Your outfits used to be a mix and match of designer things and inexpensive things and were closer to ‘reality’. Very few of us would wear 500$ 5 inch heels to brunch in real life, rich or not. And the thing is, I have money, and still I can’t relate to your blog anymore. Like other reader said, I too will focus on simpler things in my life and move on to reading a blog that is less about money and try-hard fashion. Best wishes from Iceland.
    Oh, and I absolutely hate that you never answer your readers in the comments section.

    100 dollar toothpaste? that could buy groceries for a week…that’s what I call losing touch with reality.

        The only thing worse than $100 toothpaste being hawked on someones blog without mention but that the person who is hawking it keeps responding to readers comments

    I understand that blogs want to be “aspirational” or “inspirational,” but no one should aspire to $100 toothpaste. Come on.
