Fireplaces in the Fall

October 22nd, 2010

One of the things that immediately sold me on our apartment was the old fireplace (built in the 1930′s).  It no longer functions, but it still brings a warmth to the living room that I absolutely love.  It’s now dominated by a massive flat screen above, but I still wanted to find other ways to decorate around it.   I picked up these colorful leaves a few days ago and decided that they’d make a nice and simple garland.  I secured the leaves with miniature clothespins and strung them on a piece of dental floss, which I secured with tape.  I’m sure there are far classier ways to do this, but the whole process took mere minutes and the overall effect is quite nice.

    that’s cute =]

I’m totally stealing a variation of this once my skulls and pumpkins evacuate the mantel. Something that would not catch fire the second I started one in the fireplace. Way classier than a hand turkey collage!

This is a fantastic idea. I was discussing with a friend of mine (a crafts major, obsessed with spaces and lamps) and we think you (and we as well) could take this a step further. Paint the leaves. Matte black. And hang them against the wall. You can leave them up all year around and they won’t feel too seasonal because the fall colors would be painted over.

    think about it.

Ah this is a sweet idea. Fireplaces do really add somehting to a room, don’t they. Ours doesn’t work either, but we have put an enormous framed Smiths poster on top and it gives the room a great focal point.

    wonderful idea!
i’m so excited for fall :)

what do you do with the inside of your fireplace?
ive seen people put an arrangement of chunky candles inside, and i’ve always thought it looks cool.

  • czarinakaye

question, where did you get the adorable tiny clothespins?

  • http://HauteHaus.OnSugar.com Jessica – Haute Haus

I actually just got back to Miami from DC, and had to bring home similar leaves. There really isn’t anything else that more appropriately represents Fall. We don’t have leaves like these in Miami, so they were the perfect souvenir!
