I didn't mean to buy this coat. When I went to Zara, it was to find new shoes for Sloan (something I never quite believed until I had her is how quickly toddlers grow out of them), but on my way out of the store, I spotted it. I should have walked right past it since it was 100 degrees in L.A. that day and far from sweater weather, but instead I made a beeline towards it in anticipation of chillier days. I immediately loved how soft the fabric felt and its wrapped-in-a-blanket-with-apple-cider vibe. Needless to say, I left the store that day with three baby booties and one out-of-season coat. Fortunately, there have been a few errant nights lately when the temperature has dropped far below average and a coat is perfectly acceptable. Worn over basics—a heather-gray tank and vintage denim—it provided a fun, but casual red pop to an otherwise neutral outfit.
A red plaid coat makes basics less boring.
