Domino Effect

Today marked the end of an era that lasted three blissful years. My archive of Domino Magazines, that I had been accumulating since its launch in 2005, simply grew too large for my bookshelf to accommodate. Despite the sense of order that was created with all of my issues lined up chronologically in their contrasting colors, I knew it was time to downsize my collection. Since I also used to work for the magazine, my archive holds even more significance, so instead of parting with it all, I selected only my favorite images that I’ve compiled into a binder. Here are just a few of the rooms that make my heart flutter that are luckily still available online.

that’s tragic. your facial expression does somewhat show that :)
well. beginning of a new chapter should we call it? We do need to downsize sometimes.

These images are stunning by the way!

Ah my TeenVogue collection has grown far too large, and I don’t even hardly read the magazine anymore. Still, I cannot part with it! The rooms from this magazine look AMAZING! I could live, sleep, and eat in that brown geometric-print bedroom.

your pic. is too sweet.

love the minimalistic bedroom. love it- but it would never ever happen as I have too much stuff and it would NEVER look and stay that good.

I do the same with my magazines, rip out the pages and keep them in a binder, helps me keep the clutter down from my 80 magazine subscriptions.

That last photo is magical, am feeling like I need little lanterns like that for my wedding.

Hi there-your little face look so sad! But it does make sense to downsize I suppose!!

This is something that I do also.

Say, do you still have the June/July 2007 issue?
I am looking for a copy, and Domino doesn’t have back issues available.

It’s so hard isn’t it – love the choices and you do look crestfallen!

Oh, boy, I love the lattice bathroom and the photo wall. Domino is such a nice magazine.

These pictures are beautiful! Good for your for getting organized!!!

11 Tara { 08.24.08 at 10:16 am }

OMG, I can sympathize with you on this — I have a huge pile of Domino stacked against the wall in my living room. I just prentend it’s a little table and sit decorations on top of it!

12 Carolina Eclectic { 08.24.08 at 10:33 am }

I have been trying to clean out my magazine stacks too. Its so hard!!

13 kalliope { 08.24.08 at 11:24 am }

My husband finds it really difficult to part with his mags too, but after a couple of big moves, it’s not so hard to pitch them! I am personally happy to see so many people still attached to the “analog” versus the “digital”. Balance is key :)

Great selection of images! Love the pink in particular :)

THAT BATHROOM!!! Wow.

As for the magazine stacks, I tried to keep them in check by ripping out my favorite pages/articles and putting them into binders. It worked for a while, but then I got too sentimental – especially after Jane went under. I have yet to get rid of them. LOL.

i love that style bathtub in that photo! i want one of my own but it’s probably not the most practical for college apartments :-/

17 tori { 08.24.08 at 5:47 pm }

I LOVE the bathroom with the white tub!!

18 celestyna { 08.24.08 at 11:24 pm }

You are always too adorable for words!!

And, oh my, I need to print all of those black&white photo collection I’ve got and get it on my wall.

Always an inspiration,

sad day indeed! glad you’re able to “let go” though…i’m fighting so hard to not become a pack rat in general.

oh and no wonder you have such a knack for decorating! you’re a former domino-er =)

21 Jessie Cacciola { 08.25.08 at 8:05 am }

great post! these images are melting my heart, too. ;)

22 mrs. french { 08.25.08 at 10:25 am }

wow…I so need to do this. my design magazine collection has become a design nightmare! Ack!

23 thefashionmaven { 08.25.08 at 2:08 pm }

no WAY did you used to work for domino – it’s my favorite! i have tried to do the “clean out and keep pages in a binder thing” but i end up spending HOURS looking through the magazines and eventually decide that i would keep pretty much every page anyway so i just keep them in huge stacks and drive my bf crazy!

24 katelin { 08.25.08 at 3:36 pm }

i definitely need to check this magazine out, i keep hearing such good things about it.

25 fashion chalet { 08.25.08 at 6:23 pm }

You are adorableeee! Aw, love the skirt and I’m also a fan of Domino magazine. :) :)

26 Little Red Book { 08.25.08 at 7:42 pm }

I love that pictures wall in the kitchen. I’d love to try something like that. Hope that you do keep some of your all-time favorite issues, it’s so much fun and inspirational to look back at.

27 laura { 08.26.08 at 2:00 pm }

not the dominoes!! it’s not worth it- when i left college i did a massive cleaning and i can’t tell you how often i still wish i had them all at hand- it would definitely help with my aprtment

28 Always In Style { 08.26.08 at 2:11 pm }

Sigh.

I want to move into a house that has one of each of those rooms!

Good for you for downsizing, or should I say editing your collection!

29 Alice Olive { 08.26.08 at 2:49 pm }

I love the photo wall!

And I totally understand about having to manage this ‘organisation’ issue. I have about 10 years of Vogues, Bazaars and Elles – I need to either open a library or get a large, large storage unit. Having them on display is a such a luxury.

30 koko { 08.26.08 at 7:52 pm }

yes love the photo wall… i want to do that! i always wind up with a huge magazine collection too – i wish i could just start a magazine trading club or something!

31 Budget Babe { 08.27.08 at 12:08 pm }

i face a similar problem with all my past issues of O, the oprah magazine. i can’t think of a single, good way to reuse old magazines, and my city doesn’t recycle glossies. any good ideas? goodwill won’t take them either. seems like a shame to just toss them??

32 Caroline { 08.27.08 at 1:11 pm }

I like the brown room. It has a lot of different patterns, but in the same time it is very I get a very relaxing feeling by lookin at it.

33 simplygrove { 08.27.08 at 9:44 pm }

Love all your images!!! And yes, lets exchange links!

34 The Lil Bee { 08.27.08 at 10:38 pm }

When did you work there? And was it in NYC? Oh, we need to trade stories, my friend. I may have even bumped into you in the caf and not even realized!

Different mag, same building… :)

35 sarathira { 09.23.08 at 9:13 pm }

you used to work for domino? lucky lucky lady! i love domino, and i recently did the same thing with my magazines as well, bind the favourite ones :) i love your blog!

36 Dolce Chic { 10.04.08 at 3:00 pm }

I love those bamboo chippendale chairs!!! I’m off to an antique street fair tomorrow…hoping I’ll be able to find some!

37 joanna goddard { 08.26.09 at 2:10 pm }

oh you’re so sweet! i was so sad when the magazine closed; and i put all my favorite pages into a notebook that i’ll keep forever. sounds dramatic but it’s true! (your face is so cute in that pic!)

38 logan { 08.26.09 at 2:50 pm }

I still have a couple issues tucked away I refuse to give up. And that sad face your making is the same one I wore when my letter came the pub was folding. I still have not found anything that quite replaces it.

39 CL { 01.08.10 at 2:46 pm }

This is such a tragedy. Domino was an amazing book.

I mourned the day I found out Domino was folding. I still have a stack that has found a special place in my library! Happy to have found this site too! It looks to be a promising stand in! thank you.
