DIY Jeweled Clutch

October 3rd, 2012

A couple of weeks back at H&M I found a cute geometric clutch that was close to perfect – all for $24.95. The one problem was the color (a shimmery, mermaid-blue). I felt like it had so much potential though, so I scooped it up and brought it home. Since all of the clutches I own are simple and plain, I decided to change up the look to make it a bit glitzier. I simply painted it a few coats of white paint and secured some strategically placed acrylic rhinestones with craft glue. I love the clean new look and think it’ll make for a great complement to an understated nighttime look.

I have to be honest, I’m a big fan of the clutch before the makeover. The new one just doesn’t do it for me. I think the rhinestones might be too big, but it’s a cute idea!

I like the original clutch better. Interesting take on it though. I reckon you should have left the metallic bit as it was, rather than painting it white. From afar it looks alright but closer it looks really cheap. I think it’s just the paint that makes the texture look really bad.

    What a great idea!!!
    It looks so beautiful!

this is amazing, you’re so clever!

Awful. Tween. Bad. The Bedazzling ship has sailed. Are you really trying to tell us that you’ll sport this along with one of your $300 dresses and a $500 pair of shoes? This, in some strange way, is as laughable as your $2000 Burberry leather sleeve trench.

  • Kelly

Aw, shucks. Nice try–better luck next time. Also: read your collaboration with The Everygirl. You have a two week queue of posts to pick from at anygivensecond and this is the best you came up with?

I LOVE this DIY! You did a fab job. Whooda thunk to paint it?? Now you have my brainwaves going!

Not really a fan. Nice concept but execution is ok. But a great idea anyway. Maybe have others submit to show other options. Good try!

It looks really cheap and tacky like something from the dollar store. Those plastic jewels are something that would totally attract my 5 year old daughters eye. Would you really wear this? I can’t wait to see if you actually feature it in one of your outfit posts.

Such a cool and original way of redoing this clutch! Love it :)

I have to agree too, I love the blue before you painted it white! But I do love the rhinestones though it just would have looked nice on the original metallic light blue color.

    Thanks for sharing! xoxo

The whole ‘if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all’ motto is silly and not helpful to Emily at all. She needs to know what people really think. That’s the only way to make a business grow. And that’s really what this is. It’s her passion, and her creative outlet, but she’s turned it into a business.

Honesty is the best policy. Everyone has an opinion and if you only want people to say nice things you simply do not put yourself on the internet.

(All that being said, i think it’s a great concept. I would’ve not painted the hardware and sprung for Swarovski Elements crystals instead of the plastic ones. I teach ballroom dancing and those are what we use on our costumes. They are brilliant!)

Fantastic idea, also as a gift!

love it! even though I liked the blue too :)

  • Kit

I have to agree with several of the readers. The clutch looked much better before and the makeover just makes it look cheap. Sorry, Emily. Just one miss out of all of your great hits!

  • sn

soooo…you took an understated, well crafted clutch and turned it into something hideous, tacky and loud.

    brava.

I love this idea. It really transformed it!! Thanks for the hint on making the perfect clutch!!!

  • Kiah

It was much better the way it was.

I don’t understand people who feel the need to write that they don’t like this. It isn’t hurting you. It isn’t offensive. There is no moral or ideological principle to debate. You just don’t like her clutch – why bother putting negativity out in the world for something so trivial?

(BTW – I’m not saying people shouldn’t be allowed to post negative comments. I believe in freedom of speech. I just don’t get what someone gets out of insulting another person’s craft.)

I agree that you should’ve left it unpainted and kept the rhinestones smaller, but yeesh people! There are some harsh comments on here!

I’ve been itching to rhinestone some heels to mimic the Miu Mius you wear often.. I wonder if this approach will keep them on there well?

i have to be honest, this is the first thing you’ve posted that i haven’t absolutely loved. i like the clutch as is, or even just all white. the rhinestones cheapen it though. i would be interested to see you actually integrate this into an outfit post.

I like the clutch before as well.
    Simple and elegant.
But I like trying to mix it up.

I like the original clutch, less is always better in fashion. You look is 50′s vintage styles. Its so fun how everything comes back. I am not a fan of the chumky shoes with the oversize heels, I like a more clean feminime look that is delicate but it works for many.

  • Michelle

the “problem”, a shimmery, mermaid-blue, is kind of an inconsiderate thing to say, I guess that us lesser fashionista’s just don’t get what looks good and what doesn’t… because i’d totally wear the blue any day over the dollar store created bedazzled clutch, so condescending.

  • http://www.onestilettoatatime.com Abby

Preferred it before, would of been cool if you left the metal part at least.

I’m just getting into DIY’s myself and I’ve found that gorilla glue is super messy. I’ve started out by gluing rhinestones on my flip flops and they’re so adorable! I can’t wait to expand on my DIY with a similar clutch =)

  • http://www.leprestigieux.blogspot.com Alexandra Crystal Victoria

I absolutely love it! Did anyone notice how she matched the rhinestone sizes to match the symmetry of the clutch? Gorgeous and ingenious idea to spice up a clutch!

I think that I’ll have used a different coloured rhinestone, maybe navy blue. The pop and drastic colour change will make the clutch a statement piece!

  • http://www.boxandbrownie.com Hannah

I like this in theory – I would have left the trip metallic and gone with small Swarovski crystals, I think. Cute idea though :)

  • beth

oh my gosh. This is amazing i couldnt even recognize the similarities in the clutch, you have given me a great idea! and although its not everyone’s cup of tea i can assure you its mine and it looks fabulous. If you wore this along side a designer piece im sure the pride you feel would be in the re-designed little number in your hand. well done :)

wow I wish I was crafty enough for this kind of thing. It’s a very interesting boxy style for a clutch. I usually like the softer ones more, but still veryyyyy cute
