DIY: Geode Bottle Stoppers

May 17th, 2012

I take cocktails pretty seriously, so it’s important that our bar cart’s polished, well stocked, and properly accessorized. I first discovered these geode bottle stoppers when picking items for our wedding registry and fell in love with the concept of dressing up bottles of booze. Since they’re an investment at $60+ each, I decided to make a DIY version, for less than $7 a pop!

Tools: an assortment of geodes (with flat bottoms).

Cork bottle stoppers/craft glue

1. Apply glue to the larger end of the cork.

2. Adhere geode and let dry completely.

Does the craft glue work well? I might try something a little stronger like epoxy.

  • http://littlebitsofdelight.blogspot.com Emily

Saffron infused gin? Yum! What kind of cocktails do you make with that?

  • http://maddisonhamil.blogspot.com Maddison

What a lovely idea! Question though: when you pull the stopper out, does it put much pressure on the stone/glue? Just curious if they feel pretty secure when you use them. Can’t wait to try it!

Okay, as a geologist, I must decry the use of the word geode – these are NOT geodes. Wikipedia it or look it up in a geology book if you think you disagree. The minerals/semi-precious gems will sometimes form in geodes, but the entire rock itself is the geode, not the amethyst (purple), quartz, pyrite, what have you. Sorry. But I do think these are an awesome, awesome idea.

Simple and gorgeous! Ummm… Hendrick’s Gin! Best served with a slice of cucumber instead of lime for a twist on a G & T – but then I bet you already knew that!

I am also a geologist and I physically twitched every time I read “geode.” They are really cool looking though.

the bottle toppers are an awesome idea. My fear would be that the rock would break off and the cork would get stuck inside, but if it didn’t I totally like this idea.
