DIY: Geode Bottle Stoppers

May 17th, 2012

I take cocktails pretty seriously, so it’s important that our bar cart’s polished, well stocked, and properly accessorized. I first discovered these geode bottle stoppers when picking items for our wedding registry and fell in love with the concept of dressing up bottles of booze. Since they’re an investment at $60+ each, I decided to make a DIY version, for less than $7 a pop!

Tools: an assortment of geodes (with flat bottoms).

Cork bottle stoppers/craft glue

1. Apply glue to the larger end of the cork.

2. Adhere geode and let dry completely.

I love those! But as the daughter of a geologist I have to tell you: those are not geodes! A geode is a round, innocuous rock that when sliced open reveals stunning crystal formations. What you show here are simply crystal formations. Nonetheless, they are lovely!

Will that glue hold strong enough to let you actually remove the stopper again or does the top come off and leave you resorting to a corkscrew? If the stopper is too loose you’ll loose alcohol to evaporation. Pretty, though.

Brilliant! I hate when liquors are stored in those old fashion glass jars. This is a more youthful classy way to store them.

It’s a lovely idea! I wonder if anyone has actually tried it to see how the craft glue holds up?
It’s ironic that I ran across this today as I just saw these on anthropologie.com, and thought surely I could make this myself..
    Thanks for the post!

I just made a few – so cute and they’ll make an awesome hostess gift for memorial day parties this weekend! I think they’ll be best used for wine bottles, or whatever alcohol is consumed fairly quickly! I am worried about how well the glue will hold, but if the cork is grabbed instead of the geode when uncorking,, it should be fine…I hope!

Gorgeous! I like yours better than the $60+ ones actually! But I’m curious how the glue holds up?

  • http://marfuzii.net Martin

I doubt that the glue is strong enough. Should be screwed
