DIY: Distressed Chambray

March 6th, 2013

denim7

Chambray shirts have become a complete staple in my wardrobe. I reach for them no matter what the occasion and somehow they always work (with white cut-offs by the beach or a black pencil skirt and heels for a meeting). The ones I own are all pretty structured, but I liked the idea of taking one and giving it a more distressed look with some strategic rips and tears. It was an easy way to change up an old shirt and give it an entirely new look and feel. Here’s how I did it:

denim5

Items needed: 100% cotton chambray shirt that has a fit you like (I used this one I’ve had for years from J.Crew, but here’s one that’s more affordable), scissors, box cutter, x-acto knife, cheese grater, very rough sandpaper, and some kind of protective divider (I used a padded packing envelope).

denim1

Before distressing any area of the shirt, make sure to insert your protective divider inside. This way you don’t have to worry about cutting through to the other side of your shirt (or table).

The first technique is to use rough grain sandpaper. Sanding a section will make the denim very thin, soft, and eventually will create a nice hole. The sandpaper is also good to use after cutting sections with your other tools to make it look less severe and more natural.

denim2

I also like using a box cutter or x-acto knife to slice a line directly through the fabric. After you have a clean slice, take your weapon of choice and with the tip, begin scraping the edges, exposing more and more loose threads until you get the level of distress and fray you want.

denim3

Cheese graters are also effective for creating holes and distressing the fabric. Keep your scissors on hand so you can cut away unwanted pieces of fabric or unruly threads.

denim4

The best part about customizing your own shirt is adding little touches that makes it unique. I created a distressed heart on one sleeve and made slices on the shirt along where my clavicle would be, so that it peeks through just slightly.

denim6

And don’t forget the back – showing hints of skin takes a casual shirt and makes it a bit more alluring.

What a lovely idea! I think chambray looks best when a little distressed, the worn aesthetic gives it that extra charm.

Are you serious? What a first world thing to do to buy perfectly fine clothing and then destroy it.

Be careful!! When you criticize Emily, all of her fawning admirers attack!! Obviously money is no object for her and she has way too much time on her hands!!!

      • Hannah

        LOL!

    • whatawaste!

      My thoughts exactly!!!

    • http://www.embelishedlife.blogspot.com Vicki

Like!! I couldn’t agree more! I like certain items to be “broken in” as they have adapted to the shape of your body and are comfortable but to cut holes in an expensive (or even inexpensive, who cares?!) shirt is just wasteful in my opinion. I had jeans that developed a hole and they had to go in the trash, that is not a fashion statement! :)

      • noelle

Obviously money is no object and she has way too much free time!!

        • roberta whittiker

Heard this before. You are sounding like a broken record.

  • http://a-proseo.com Debby

I think you distressed it too much. JCrew shirts cost $50+

    • noelle

      This one cost $78!!

I’m not sure how I feel about this DIY Emily, I would have made sure it was an old shirt from a cheaper store (or thrifted)….I adore my J. Crew chambray but wouldn’t want to take sandpaper to it :( Especially since they usually retail closer to $100. I know you have better DIY ideas than this :)

    • jolene

      I guess she doesn’t!!

    • Kim

I totally agree unfortunately. I wouldn’t shell out $100 for a nice chambray shirt and then tear it up – I think this is a great DIY but possibly on a cheaper/more disposable shirt.

      • http://www.preppypanache.com Rebecca

Have to agree with the dismays out there over “distressing” a perfectly good, pretty expensive chambray shirt.

        • http://thegirlandherdog.com caitlin

Same! Couldn’t imagine doing this to a new shirt.

      • http://ina-wonderland.blogspot.com ina

        Tasia,i totally agree!

    • emma

*GASP* you purposely destroyed a $60 shirt from J. Crew?? this goes against everything (i thought) Cupcakes & Cashmere stood for!

That looks so good! Great idea, I have an old jeans jacket at home that I never wear anymore so I’m definitely going to try this :) Thanks! x

  • Zooks

I’m sorry but if I saw someone wearing this, regardless of how made up they were, I’d think they were a transient. Distressed jeans are awful but this is by far the most awful thing I have seen so far. Why spend so much on a top only to ruin it yourself on purpose? I get that it’s “fashion” but seriously?

  • Sarah

I’m not really into wearing clothes with holes and definitely wouldn’t do this to a pricey JCrew shirt.

  • http://laughinglatte.com/ Leigh

This is awesome! I love the use of the cheese grater!

Hm. It’s not even the destroying a possibly expensive shirt that bugs me, it’s that it’s a little too distressed. Making it look faded and worn is nice, but this looks like the shirt was mauled by an animal. Not a good look.

    • Shan

Yeah, I completely agree with you. Way too torn up and ratty looking. I don’t think anyone would take me seriously if I walked down in a grungy looking shirt like that. This look is better suited to teenagers I think, not grown women in their 20s and 30s.

I like the distressed look that you did on the pockets and sleeve – but I think the holes in the shirt near your shoulder look silly! I think it’d look better if you used a patterned fabric to sort of patch it up a bit. It just looks like you were trying to climb over a chain-link fence and got caught!

How weird is it that just recently I was looking for a DIY chambray tutorial? The problem is that all the tutorials I found were similar to this, but they’re not exactly answering my question… I have a chambray shirt the material of which is sort of stiff. Any tips to simply soften the material (without the cuts/tears/gratings/etc.)? I just want it to hang more loosely on me instead of being so structured… Any help would be great! XOXO

I remember when I was little, I just got a pair of scissors and tried to cut holes out haha. It didn’t turn out as well as I hoped it would. These look like store-bought perfection!
