Croque-Madame

January 3rd, 2013

There’s almost nothing better than a classic ham and cheese sandwich…unless it’s topped with a fried egg. When it comes to comfort food, the croque-madame (or monsieur, if you omit the egg) might be the pinnacle example. The richness of the Mornay sauce, saltiness of the ham, and the gooey egg yolk combine perfectly to create an exceptionally rich meal. I’m clearly not a big believer in New Year’s diets and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate a cold January morning than with one of these sandwiches (recipe here), preferably washed down with a Bloody Mary.

Why wasn’t your cheese soaked in white wine? Every time I have made/or ordered this the cheese is always soaked in white wine. Maybe I have been doing it wrong all this time.

I actually prefer Rachel Khoo’s recipe of Croque Madame muffins http://eatlittlebird.com/2012/04/19/croque-madame-muffins/

You take beautiful food photos! I used to love a good ham and cheese melt, always made me feel all warm and gooey inside. Now I’m into cheese and sun dried tomato melts :)
