Cosmetic Clutter

April 26th, 2011

{before}

Given my love of cosmetics, you’d think that I’d have a bathroom drawer that rivaled Sephora in both its scope and organization. Definitely not the case. I even questioned whether or not to include my “before” picture, simply because it was so mortifying (confession: I even removed a few items before snapping the shot).

The other day it took me five minutes to locate a lip gloss, at which point I realized I had to clean things up. I owned doubles and triples of the same item; some of which had been dried up for years. There were eye shadows from college, pieces of trash and used Q-tips; in short, it was disgusting. I decided to create divided sections for eyes, lips, bronzers, cheeks and foundation/powders and only kept the items that I love and actually use.

{after}

{old dividers that I spray painted a glossy gold}

{Dividers for: powders, bronzers and eye make-up}

{Dividers for: lips, cheeks and skin; as well as a few other necessities}

{Vintage saucers now hold bobby pins and rubber bands}

P.S. You can see other organization posts here and here.

    This has totally inspired me to clean my makeup bags out! Once I have a space to organize like you do, I will go crazy with fun containers like that! I have tons of old makeup that is all crusty and gross too, totally reminded me of that. haha!

    We don’t always pay attention to how much clutter we create with these products lol. Thanks for reminding me that I need to organize my collection and thanks for the pointers!

    I am such a makeup junkie myself, and my overly filled drawer looks more or less like yours! So It’s nice to see someone so organized have their weak spots;) Your blog is such an inspiration, as always, and this post just motivates me to clean up! Who knows what treasures I might find:)
    Have a wonderful day!

    I also recently had a spring clean of my cosmetic drawers. I was horrified to realise quite how much make-up I have that I’d simply forgotten about as it was totally inaccessible. On the bright side, it was almost like I’d just been shopping – so many pretty lipsticks etc to choose from now!

    Oh a woman after my own heart!! Looks so good with the recycled plastic trays and the vintage saucers…Love it. Love that clarity you get when you’ve had a good sort out. Bet you found things you forgot you owned too!

    Oh my I can definitely understand! :) My beauty products stores in cosmetics cases depending on their usage..that’s the solution I think is best for me to keep my cosmetics in proper places. I just wish I can have a organizer in one place..but I think if that happens – it will be a mess :)

    Good for you! Old eye makeup is actually dangerous–full of bacteria.
    Love the gold spray painting idea.

  • The_Dark_Lady

    I did this a couple of years ago, mainly using modular opalescent plastic drawer units customised for lipsticks, tubes, brushes etc that slip neatly in the drawer (one unit has a moveable shelf on top so you can fit more into the drawer). This has been a great time and money saver – I made myself use up opened (still good) items first and immediately cut down on my spending. I was also amazed at how many doubles of things I had and was able to see which impetuous “bargain” buys were a waste of money to stop history repeating! I streamlined my purchases and now looke for quality products that are really versatile, and have never had a messy drawer since. I love how you have reused very inexpensive plastic baskets and sprayed them gold for a really inexpensive makeover – it looks terrific!

    Inspirational!

    Yeah it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea for me to do something like that as well. My before pic wouldn’t be quite as bad as that (my drawers are by nature categorized. One drawer for lips and eyes, the other for face and cheeks.) But the drawers themselves could use more order. Those dividers are a great idea!

    This is such a great idea! I love the way you took essentially old dividers and spruced them up into something you can show off.
    I definitely have the need for this for my wedding photography business. I could separate my paperwork and all of my camera acessories using dividers like this.
    This is a great idea!

    If that’s what your drawers look like with all those unopened boxes of expensive makeup products, just imagine what your credit card bills look like.

    i was just looking through mine and realized i have UNOPENED YSL skincare from like 4 years ago. shame. My cosmetic drawers are a hot hot mess. How clever to organize them via zones; lips, eyes, face..nice.

  • http://www.cancerinthecity.com sunshine

    That is a great idea! My make-up is everywhere. Mind you I did this in the kitchen never thought to do this in other parts of the house.

  • http://kpfusion.blogspot.com Kimmie

    WHY is it so hard to get rid of makeup? LOL I have tons, and it’s all (finally!) confined to a drawer. I never would’ve thought to use those dividers for anything else besides old sewing stuff & schools supplies. Great & easy DIY tip!!

  • http://thekeypieces.blogspot.com Lou

    I’m the same, it sometimes takes me ages to find one thing that I want. This is a really good idea.

    Such a satisfaction that comes with organization. It makes me feel a little more at peace knowing others can get as cluttered as me but can appreciated a good dose of pretty organization.

    I honestly couldn’t keep up with organizing by eyes/lips/etc.; I actually sort my cosmetics by occasion (ostentatiously labeled “glamour,” “costume” and “quotidian”), and that has simplified almost everything in the teeny-tiny bathroom I share with my boyfriend–we have a pedestal sink; I have no storage!

  • Pam

    Love the gold color. Good choice. I did this before I moved. I bought a large lucite makeup holder online that fits on the back of my toliet. lt keeps me organized as everything has its place. It hold buishes and all my make up. I live for getting ready with everything where it is supposed to be.
