City Slickers
It goes without saying that the city in which you live has a big impact on the way you dress. Case in point: New York. I’m always impressed by the amount of effortlessly stylish women running through the streets in high heels (since walking LA is an abstract concept). Even those who weren’t necessarily dressed up still managed to appear put together, whether they accessorized a plain t-shirt with layers of gold necklaces or paired a sweet floral dress with biker boots. Though I’m back in California, I want to focus on incorporating a bit more East Coast elements into my wardrobe and I’ve collected a few of my favorites here.
Studded Faux Leather Vest, Forever 21: $27.80
Sequin Boyfriend Blazer, Topshop: $160
Faux Fur Vest, BB Dakota: $57
Basic Oversize Crop Tee, Topshop: $32
Skull-Print Shirt, Alexander McQueen: $270
Button Shoulder Top, Forever 21: $24.80
Triangle Gem Skirt, Topshop: $160
5 Band Skirt, Pleasure Doing Business: $88
Chiffon Sequined Skirt, See By Chloé: $395
Brinx Boots, Steve Madden: $169.95
Platform booties, DVF: $395
Peeptoe Booties, Giuseppe Zanotti: $675

I love the leather vest. I’m going to have to try that one. I’m picturing it with the perfect tunic tank, leggings, & boots.
oh, im lovin’ the new collection!!! =D
You deff get the NY style ! I tend not to notice so much since i live there but your SO RIGHT ! great choices !
Very cool, you nailed it!
those items are all amazing! i’ve always thought you’re more NYC than L.A.
Love your picks Emily! Especially those DVF boots! Ow Ow. I definately know what you mean about dressing for where you live or rather the lack of people getting dressed where you live in my case
I guess that’s what happens when you live in no man’s land. I would love to take a trip to NY.

I was just thinking the same thing about how the city in which you live influences your dress. In Boston (my hometown), the women all wear crisp clean clothing, professional and … boring!! Also, EVERYONE has a Longchamp bag, which is a great bag, but still, I wouldn’t get one just for the mere fact that they are everywhere! I am always wanting to make my style more eclectic but it’s challenging when the style tone of the city is more conservative.
And I need a bit more LA in my wardrobe. This summer was all about that, actually. Maxi dresses, leather flip-flops, and lots of accessories to detract from the growing belly! Oh, and let’s not forget the beachy hair (I couldn’t really deal with blow-drying for much of the summer).
What a roundup! I’ll take one of each, please.
Love the striped skirt, the leather vest, the sequin boyfriend blazer and the Steve Madden boots!
That black and white skirt is sweet. I’d definitely like to add more East Coast to my wardrobe, too – it’s so easy to dress like your surroundings and forget to try new things + different styles.
Very very nice. I love all the outfits, they’re gorgeous. I agree, NY women have amazing style.
great stuff for the fall season…all hot

oooh! I’m loving these pieces..I can’t wait to find my perfect boots for fall and winter..I’ll know them when I see them and these DVF pair are certainly on my list!
I WANT THAT PINK SKIRT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love NYC style…sometimes I think the word style doesn’t really exist in the Midwest! LOL
I by the other hand, have abandoned highheels since living in Barcelona. The reason? Blocks and blocks and big, big blocks to walk have destroyed my feet and shoes…but can’t stop buying them!!! Dam, I love them!! Lol…and LOVE all your choices Emily.
I have that entire top row so I must be a true New Yorker now or am I still a Londoner dressing the way that I like regardless of being in NY? hmmm I could possibly write an eassy on that : -)
ps. You never go wrong ankle boots!!
pps. Sorry I missed you in NY but you have me wanting to try out that pizza place ASAP!!!!!!
I just bought that forever 21 leather vest. It comes in the mail today! I also adore that pink studded skirt from TopShop.

The heel-walking astounds me too! I love that oversized crop tee from Top Shop!
I so desperately need a faux fur vest. I’m still kicking myself for missing out on a totally affordable one from Forever 21 yesterday.
The entire top row is gorgeous. I won’t be in New York until this winter, but you’ve got me already thinking of what to pack!

Hey! I LOVE your blog, but I need to see more NYFW!!! It’s like, my fave blogger went to NYFW with Coach and all I got was one blogpost! I’m seeing loads of coverage elsewhere, and would love to see your take on it.
Super cute clothes. I really like the biker boots.
I’m always thinking about high heels and long walkings. I don’t know how it’s possible! This is something really hard to do in São Paulo…
Love the DVF booties!
Oh… I love boot weather!! Can’t wait to start wearing them!
Great finds

Hey, Emily.
I love the selection BUT I have a question for you. Do you think it’s worth buying anything that’s made of faux-leather. Last winter I bought a pair of faux-leather boots: I loved the style and they felt really soft on my feet and the price-tag was great… But within a week I realized that they make my feet sweat (gross, I know) and then started falling apart… So now I am wondering whether I just got a particularly bad pair or if that’s the norm with faux-leather….
I’d appreciate everybody’s thoughts on that!
I heart the cropped faux leather vest and black buttoned shirt from Forever 21 … guess once a bargainista, always a bargainista!

Of course my favorite item would be the most expensive one!
To see the people of NY walking fast (but stylishly) on their sidewalk is one of my dreams. Haha.

Great choices. I agree about the women in NY. I love the Topshop jacket. I just bought one similar, but H&M.

So very true
- Loving those peeptoe booties – but speeking of cities you live in, I think there is only one day a year that I could actually wear them here in T.O.
Of course, I’m a fan of all the booties that you posted. I’ve been obsessed with them for so long. I don’t think I”ll get tired of them anytime soon. I agree-everyone in New York is so stylish, I can’t get over how everyone is put together, even with minimal effort. California needs to incorporate this!

gorgeous!!
Being a Cali transplant in NYC I can validate everything you just said Emily! Just in the short year and half I’ve been here my style has shifted dramatically. From excessively girlie to now much more tough/rocker yet with a feminine balance. I never thought it would happen but I’m sure glad it did
ps- that sequin jacket is to die for! <3
Great selection. I can’t even pick a fave because they are all so fabulous!
I am absolutely inspired by everything East Coast…and those skirts give me life, especially the triangle gem skirt! http://www.sheisobsessed.blogspot.com
So many great picks here, I’d definitely wear them all! My favorite has got to be that chiffon sequin skirt, so fun and glamorous!
I die for that Chiffon Sequined Skirt + that {beyond-glamorous} Sequin Boyfriend Blazer – crazy chic.
Great finds, missy. Have a marvelous weekend!
Cheers.
Oooo gold sequins + faux fur = 2 fall must haves
