Cupcakes and Cashmere

Changing Room

August 17th, 2008

After what seemed like weeks of painting and touch-ups, our wall is officially done (with minimal red-splattered carpeting to match).  After the Venetian blinds were taken down, it became evident just how much they took away, both aesthetically and functionally.  The new drapes, which are a greenish-khaki, not only complement the color of the wall, but let in an incredible amount of natural light.  Lastly, our West Elm cube cut-out dresser arrived, which means that my wardrobe is no longer confined to laundry baskets.  The one question remains:

How to decorate the immense amount of space above the dresser?

this empty bit of wall screams for a mirror!
    btw, love the decorating-skills.

I think a vintage classroom hanging map would look great! Would break up the space but also compliment the new color!

the room looks fantastic!!! I would say something round over the dresser to offset all the edges of the furniture and windows ….like a large round mirror and a green leafy plant …it’s good feng shui too. :)

Definitely a mirror or a large picture.

  • http://www.leeselooks.blogspot.com Lisa

loving the re-decoration. That red wall is so darn classy.

    some ideas:

    Big, old vintage mirror.

a selection of your favorite + inspirational pics– ALL in black and white and placed in different/vintage-y frames. All sizes and colors… I have been working on my wall for months now. I. love. it.

a selection of photos/pictures framed ( all sizes, but mostly large) and simply leaned up against the wall. You could even aad a mirror in there. Then put a few candles down, a selction of collected vases and fresh flowers as you like

    ……….

    good luck.

Ohhhhh it’s LOVELY! Great job Emily =)
You could always do a collage of cool frames, a tall piece of artwork leaning on the dresser , or a mirror (although you do have plenty of light from the windows…definitely like it with the blinds down). That antler lamp is great too- you did a perfect mix of accessories (not too masculine and not too effeminate).

huge black and white painting or photo, maybe a sepia (sp?) photo with a large wood frame?

  • http://classyfab.blogspot.com tori

A mirror or a beautiful picture. I LOVE the red

Whatever you put there, I think it would look really good with an ornate, baroque style frame. It makes for even more drama.

    Nice job!

oh wow the room looks fantastic!! i have a problem with deciding on decorative items.. i have the big pieces.. but still need filler items to as well.. i’d suggest oversize items.. like the really tall vases, etc.

by the way i tagged you for the premio award.. i think you might already have done it though… :T

You’ve got a lovely room there! I think the blank wall would look really interesting if you filled it up with pieces of wall art or photos like this:

I would say a classic gold antique framed mirror!!

  • http://makedostyle.blogspot.com Make Do & Mend

Perfect job – a gorgeous painting on the wall and lovely flowers in a spectacular vase on top of dresser.

  • http://stylediscovery.blogspot.com songy

    That room looks fantastic!

Large mirror with a bold frame – reproduced antique kind maybe?
That will make the room looking even bigger and you can you look at your gorgeous self every time you walk past it.

Love the combination of colours )))

WOW! I want to live with you *lol*

Seriously, I am in love with your home decor. I would so love you to furnish my room! Your taste is so refined, yet young and fresh. Applause for what you’ve achieved!

    P.S. I would say a big mirror.

I agree with everyone that a mirror would look great–perhaps something very modern and streamlined.

  • http://www.zestyperspective.blogspot.com Jessie Cacciola

so cool. i’ve always been scared of red, but i love this! xo

  • http://heart-of-light.blogspot.com/ Rachel

Have to agree with the people who suggested a mirror. Or maybe plants? He he.
    Can’t wait to see it.

  • http://www.asiwassaying.com Dingo

Day-um! That room looks hot! I agree with Lisa’s suggestion of the multiple picture frames.

  • http://dapperkid.blogspot.com dapper kid

LOVE the room!! I think a photo frame or two on the dresser, some flowers in a pretty vase and either a nice mirror or vintage movie poster on the wall :)

  • Neekoh

I love it! I think a black and white, enlarged photo would look great above the dresser — it won’t take away from the color and it’ll pop, especially if the contrast is slightly increased. Plus, you’ll get to show off your photog skills ;)

  • http://savvymode.blogspot.com savvymode sg

how pretty. i love it. i painted all the rooms in the house with different colors last year.

  • http://style-ishwedding.blogspot.com tiffany

the room looks great! I think you should buy a big canvas and paint it yourself to hang over the dresser. You can do like a black/white abstract kind of painting or just a bright color to contrast with the room.

  • http://www.tenacious-dee.blogspot.com Dennise

I agree with everyone who said black and white photographs, I think that would look exquisite on your magnificent red wall!

  • http://www.thebudgetbabe.com Budget Babe

Gorgeous! You should be featured on apartmentherapy.com or something, you have such a good eye for design! Wanna come decorate my place…?? :)

  • http://fashionherald.blogspot.com fashionherald

That wall is crying out for a painting! But as this can be expensive, I also love the big mirror idea. Mirrors are great for opening up a space, but looks like you don’t have space issues?!

  • LuVvy

Hi….I think that you should go thrifting for an ultimate unusual find for that spot. There is nothing quite like a “hey, what is that thing…?” from your guests as they venture from room to room. The color is a nice touch.

I am the queen of thrifting for house stuff and feel like I have sharpened my abilities a bit just very recently since finding a real gem of a place in the pearl district in Portland.

A mirror, candles, photos or a framed piece of art is a good start. I just don’t think its creative or challenging enough for what you’re trying to accomplish. HOWEVER, something personal and unique adds charm and provides you with a dose of daily inspiration. For me, the ultimate quest lies in one question: am i always surrounding myself with the things that I love? Are those things inspiring me to influence myself towards greater happiness and creativity? If the answer is yes…then peel back those layers to get at it indefinitely. If not, then pitch it out the window (:

Check out my blog and let me know what you think! I’d love to hear what you have to say…

    cheers!

Oooh, lovely!! I’m loving those red walls!! If that were my wall, I’d hang some art or something funny/weird, but that’s me. ;)

  • Andreea

That looks fantastic! I love the red.. it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t had the guts.

I agree with most everyone that a mirror with a bold frame should go on the wall (maybe something vintage). Good luck.

I vote for a giant, metal sculpture full of motion.

    Or, whatever YOU want! ;)

  • http://observationmode.blogspot.com/ enc

I haven’t said: I can’t believe how well you’ve transformed that room. It is superb.

  • http://alwaysinstylenyc.blogspot.com/ Always In Style

OMG – I am totally jealous – the room looks great, what a lovely space to come home to!

I would have to say that space is just screaming mirror to me…maybe one of those inlaid Moroccan numbers? I think the intricacy of the pattern would really create a dramatic impact.

    Enjoy your new digs!

  • http://allure-allure.blogspot.com Allure

You did a great job with that room!

I’d fill the space above the dresser with a picture gallery. Some inspiration:

    above your dresser:

i envision a large white, hand carved mirror.

    something like these: http://www.evadesigns.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/white_mirrors.jpg

or mayhaps a moving piece of art? =)
