Celebration Cake

January 3rd, 2012

There are certain occasions that require celebration cakes. They look like a party on a plate, with fun colors, lots of sprinkles, and each bite has the ideal amount of frosting. On the last day of 2011, I felt it a good time to bake up something special to bring us into the new year. I made a basic yellow cake (recipe here) with Magnolia Bakery’s creamy vanilla frosting (recipe here), which I promptly turned light pink with a bit of food coloring. The result was exactly what I had hoped for and was just the thing to eat right before the clock struck twelve.

So cute. That would be adorable for a baby shower. I had some friends who had somebody make the outside frosting white and inside frosting pink or blue depending on the sex of the baby. Then, they cut into the cake in front of friends and family to find out what the baby was.

I’m 4 months pregnant and I am craving a piece of this cake! I think I will be making it for my birthday this weekend :) Did you alter the recipes at all in order to make yours three layers instead of two? Or did you simply make each layer thinner? I want this now! Thanks for sharing.

    Dear Emily!

    What an amazing cake!!!!
I am getting married this spring, and I am making the wedding cake my self :)
This cake is now at no. 1 at my list of beautiful ideas for homemade wedding cakes.
I live in Europe (Denmark), and I would like to know how to get the fabulous spinkles??? Do you know if I can buy them online somewhere? And perhaps you know the name of the manufacturer?
I am getting married around easter-time, and these wonderful sprinkles would be a perfect match to my “easter-pastel-color-theme”.
I hope you can help me!! :)

Thank you for an amazing blog with lots and lots of inspiration.

    Hi from Lærke.

Ps. I made your fleur de sel caramels around christmas – they were soooo yummy :)

I have mine in the oven right now! I’m making a one layer version because I only have one cake pan… but I also live by myself, so that’s probably a safer bet ;-)
