Blaze Ahead

July 28th, 2008

In the 80′s, blazers were reserved for interviews and formal dinners, but they’ve made an incredible comeback in an entirely fresh way. Gone are the bulky shoulder pads and fabrics that rivaled wallpaper.  Instead, they’re being paired with the simplest of outfits, like tissue-thin tops and the shortest of skirts. Since I was forced to dispose of many old jackets this weekend in order to fit in my new [read: shared] closet, I’ve decided that a new blazer would cheer me up stat. Here are a few that I’m contemplating:

For those of us that are still apprehensive about the trend, I think Silence & Noise’s Seamed Blazer is a wonderful transitional piece. At first glance, it almost looks like a cardigan, but brings a bit of edge with its asymmetrical cut and corduroy-trimmed cuffs.

This Lili Marlene jacket is ridiculously chic in a crisp white. Since it’s such a classic menswear shape, I would pair it with a ruffled dress in a blush color (I am also lusting after her white nail polish).

Since nothing creates a more dynamic outfit than the combining of different patterns, this Striped 3Q Jacket would look great with a variety of prints. I love how the sleeves can easily be pushed up and I would be sure to pair this blazer with gold cuffs on both wrists.

Which is your favorite of the three?

That white one is very nice, it’s my pick for sure!

I love this trend, but I must state for the record that I did wear my blazers in the 80s very much like the hipsters du jour are wearing them now. ;-)

My favourite is the white one. I’ve always loved -and worn- blazers. They make a huge difference.

I could never pull off a full on blazer, but I definitely pulled my girly little striped seersucker out from the back of my closet and wore it on the boat yesterday. I guess I must have been channeling you mentally.

You’ve really inspired me, I will now begin my search and implement the classic blaze to my wardrobe. It’s the new default cardigan. I like the 2nd blazer the best for me.

I used to wear blazer every day but now I fell wierd wearing them.
I have a pair but they have a fenmenine or interesting detail, not like the ones I had almost 20 years ago.

Yep.. blazers rock. more versatile than anything else I have in my wardrobe. As you shown in your post.. formal or casual never disappointing. I bought mine at et vous in Cannes, France when I was at a conference I think. Paid a fortune but it really does work with my jeans and it has been my killer suit for many interviews.. ^^

LOVE BLAZERS! Have several and they are perfect. Contemplating getting another one in Jeans fabric, they go with everything. Love the white one(I myself have one in linen). Be sure to share a pic when you get yours!

That striped blazer is awesome. I’m on the hunt for a shrunken navy blazer though–like every one seems to be lately!

  • http://amandabrookes.blogspot.com Gypsy Soul

lu..lu..lu..luuuuv the white one! it’s tailored and very sharp looking. plus it could be worn year-round (the 3Q sleeves would be tough in the cold and the cord cuffs might get hot in the summer). sassy!!!
