Before and After: Nightstands

When I moved into my boyfriend’s place, I happily set aside my girly taste so that our apartment wouldn’t look like a princess-inspired bachelor pad.  That compromise began to take its toll a year later when I realized my bedside table had become a graveyard for half-read books and my sad little Ikea lamp.  This past weekend we decided to make a few changes to our place, beginning with our nightstands.

After a couple coats of primer, white glossy spray paint, knobs from Anthropologie and a new lamp (here), our bedroom now has a clean look that’s incredibly relaxing.

This is super nice, I mean no comparision possible between the two! Well done for painting a dark brown furniture into white, so white, I’d never thought it could come out so bright.

I love it, I recently redecorated my bedroom in white, silver and light blue. Yours has inspired me to make over a wooden chest of draws :)

8 S.Elisabeth { 09.21.09 at 3:13 am }

Aw what a good idea! it looks much girlier and prettyier now =) and the picture in the frame is too adorable!

9 Couture Cookie { 09.21.09 at 3:17 am }

Love Anthro! I so know what you mean, by the way… my nightstand is a depressing mess, equal parts half-read books, napkins and coasters that I’ve forgotten to put away after having coffee in bed. Thanks for inspiring me to shape up a little! :)

Thanks for posting. I moved in with my boyfriend about 2 weeks ago and we are having the same problems blending styles. My old condo had a bubble gum pink kitchen and the bathroom had one fuschia wall and the rest was polka dot wallpaper.

Great makeover!! And I agree, it’s so much better to fix things up than buying a new one. It was a very nice piece of furniture to start with, and this just makes it extra snazzy!

PS- thanks for your sweet comment on my blog :)

53 Keely { 09.21.09 at 9:34 am }

I love the change, it really brightens up the room!

54 Alzy { 09.21.09 at 9:37 am }

57 Maddy { 09.21.09 at 9:57 am }

I love the transformation!

It’s funny because I’ve been trying to revamp our EIK area. But when I stepped into the Michael’s Arts & Craft store yesterday, I panicked and walked right back out. I think I might need to start with a small DIY project instead :)

58 Amber { 09.21.09 at 10:01 am }

I’m inspired, that looks so much better. My favorite accessory change has to be that lamp!

62 Linda { 09.21.09 at 10:13 am }

Looks amazing! I can really see Domino inpiration here. Your lucky, my fiance would laugh at me for that, he would think it was too girl. I love it though. You have a very good eye for design. What do you do for a living? I don’t think I know.

63 Calvine { 09.21.09 at 10:14 am }

hahaha i am cracking up at your “medieval times” description. What a wonderful update!

Really love that white nightstand…we need more antique/unique stuff and less IKEA but that will happen when the time comes :)

I LOVE the Anthropologie, snowflake-y knob. Just darling. I’ve been seeing furniture being sprayed and painted white all over … makes me wonder if I should be painting my wood-rimmed mirror and drawer white too … Hmm …

Hey Emily,

It looks great! How did you do this? I need to look into this, but I am scared to mess with my furniture even though it could use a new look. How do you start?

Great job!

69 Wrecked Stellar { 09.21.09 at 10:59 am }

Wow, thought you had bought a brand new nightstand! I love that you took something you already had and used your creativity toward it! Love the snowflake touch- esp. since snowflakes aren’t too girly- but can be enjoyed by both sexes!

This is so fantastic! I would love to have a nightstand like this! All the little details with the knobs, the antiqued paint and the lamp make it perfect. I also think you found such a happy medium between masculinity and being princessy. :)
