Bedroom Basics

May 22nd, 2012

After our rather hurried attempt to purchase bedding this past weekend, it got me thinking about the general guidelines I follow when it comes to creating a tranquil sleeping space. My bedroom is one of my favorite spots – the windows open up to a sea of red bougainvillea, it’s calm and tranquil, and it’s the place I miss the most when I’m away from home. My list is short and simple, but since I’m always curious how other people set up their bedrooms, I thought I’d share mine:

1. De-clutter. I used to have a nightstand that was overflowing – chapstick, a glass of water, magazines, stacks of books, framed pictures…the list goes on. I now keep it relatively sparse with just some simple essentials.

2. Buy the best bedding you can afford. This is a motto I’ve only recently adopted, as I used to scoop things up simply because they were on sale, not because I particularly liked them. But since you spend so much of your time in bed, it shouldn’t merely be an afterthought.

3. TV-less. I look forward to watching TV in a hotel bed from the moment I check-in, but we don’t have one in our bedroom at home. I think it helps promote a more restful sleep, and I always find I’m more relaxed when I read before bed instead of watching TV.

4. Change with the season. I used to use the same comforter on my bed throughout the year, only changing up the duvet cover. Now I love the tradition of changing our sheets and switching to a lighter blanket once the weather warms up.

5. No clocks. The moment I removed the clock from my bedside table (it’s now across the room), I started sleeping a lot sounder. In the past I would check the time throughout the night, calculating just how much (or little) time I had left in bed. That only perpetuated the issue and now since I have no way of knowing the time, I simply fall back asleep.

6.  Pick a palette. I love the idea of an all-white bed, but it just wasn’t practical for our two very active (and messy) cats. I wanted our bed to still feel crisp and neutral, so we still added some white elements, but with a charcoal-colored quilt and shams with a cashmere throw in a light gray.

7.  Always make the bed. This isn’t just about having a bed that looks presentable, but it also gets your day started on the right foot. I once heard that if you begin your day by accomplishing something (even if it’s as simple as making the bed), it sets the stage for productivity.

8. Keep a blanket at the foot of the bed. This is one of the quickest ways to make a bed look inviting and it’s ideal for impromptu naps.

9. Embrace fresh air. While candles and diffusers are great, nothing beats fresh air. We keep our windows open pretty much around the clock since I love a cool breeze when I’m cuddled up under the covers.

10. Window coverings. We keep our windows uncovered during the week since natural light makes it a lot easier to get up in the morning. But during the weekends, it’s nice to be able to draw the shades so that you don’t feel pressured to get out of bed.

I’d love to know…what are your “rules of the bedroom?”

I too believe that there should be no tv or visible clock in the bedroom! I bought a clock/ipod dock a few months ago that you could dim and shut the time off of and I if I wake up in the middle of the night I find it easier to fall back asleep without it.

I love having a bunch of different pillow options. There are the decorative ones, and then the ones you actually sleep on! And making your bed is a must!

I love your bedrooms standards. I follow similar rules and I too believe that the bedroom should be your sanctuary. When your bedroom is together, you’re together.

  • http://nunaya marz

THis is the most boring bedroom ever. Not only is it boring, but it’s ugly and bland. No creativity. It’s not minimalist either, so you have no argument. Why do people read her lousy blog?

  • Catherine

I always throw the covers back completely when I get up and don’t make the bed right away. This allows the bed to air out and any dampness from nighttime perspiration to dry.

  • http://www.aroseandherclothes.com Anna Rose

Those are great rules! I always try to go by the saying,’If your room stresses you out or makes your mind go crazy, it is time to de-clutter!’

I’m so glad you posted this because I am moving into a new apartment and I have always had a tv in my bedroom but was contemplating not putting one in my new bedroom this time around and you have totally helped me make my decision… no tv! Also, I never make my bed but after reading that starting the day off with an accomplishment makes you more productive throughout the rest of your day I have decided that I am going to add that to my new apartment resolutions list! What a great post… love your blog!

Love your rules of the bedroom, it’s hard though to apply all that to a room I share with my boyfriend.
I’d love to remove the tv from the room, but that won’t happen!
Thanks for a great blog! Love it! Though we are still waiting for your wedding photos! :)

What a wonderful post, thank you Emily!

Personally, I love to keep the top of my nightstand free of all but a framed illustration, pretty lamp, hand cream, Diptyque candle and a bud vase for flowers (in the drawer below I keep more bedtime toiletries, a few books and magazines and a pillow spray). Otherwise, I love to keep the room clean, clutter-free and inviting (fresh air, flowers, candles and crisp white sheets).

I love this post Emily!! I got inspired after reading it and went ‘minimal’ in the bedroom! I’m still living at home so some things were non-negotiable (TV) however I’ve found that since I’ve been covering the TV at night with a throw that my sleep is much more peaceful and unbroken so when I do move out next year the TV will not be joining me in the bedroom! I also removed my clock from view – I think it will take some adjusting but I know it will help me sleep better in the long run. My nightstand has been decluttered and now holds my favourite perfumes, Diptyque candle, small jewellery bowl and bud vase and it looks far more chic and elegant than it did before!! As for fresh air and making the bed every single morning these have always been non-negotiables for me – I can’t get my head in a good space if I leave home with my bed unmade and even when my room isn’t 100% tidy if the bed is made I feel much calmer!! Thanks for all your great tips!! Prue xxx

I definitely agree with the no TV rule. I also prefer to must have various lighting options depending on the mood.

  • http://thisnicelife.blogspot.com Amy

I agree with so many of your points. I learned them by watching my mother and sister change the furniture with each and every season, and live in rooms without a television, radio, clock or anything that had to be plugged in. The only hint of technology in their rooms was a lamp!

I used to laugh at that, but find myself living the same way. I feel so incredibly calm in my room, and love it. If I may, I would also recommend having fresh flowers in the bedroom. I go to the Farmer’s Market every weekend for new florals, and they’ve made a world of difference in my room. I also splurge on candles and pillows for the room, and have never regretted a single scent. I only wish my room were big enough to light all the scents at once!

    Cheers to a long weekend.

    1. OMG love the bud vase…where from?
    2. My rule for the bedroom is that it makes ME feel glamorous…I let the hubs have a say in other rooms but the bedroom is my sanctuary. Give your man a say in other rooms but take the reigns in the bedroom…I realize there is a huge double entendre to what i’ve written, but ladies get your mind out of the gutter and make your bedroom fab! xo shortcutstofabulous.com

I grew up in a household where every room had a “theme,” so naturally, my sense of design is polar opposite. My dad loved nautical themes, and I gravitate toward boho and Indian inspiration. My bedroom today is purple and red with orange accents! I have photo frames on the walls in clusters with everything from local art to the buffalo fur I collected as a child, haha! Playbills from Broadway, beautiful photos from magazines–anything–if I like it, it gets a thrift frame and a spot on my wall. I find it so comforting. While minimalism has its place in my heart, I just love “organized clutter.” I can’t help myself!

Such a great post, I certainly agree with no Tv in the bedroom, but I also like to have a blanket over my whole bed so nobody sits on it with the clothes they wear on the street and have a little notebook by my bed, because the best ideas always come at night;)

I love fresh flowers and since neither of us is allergic, we keep a nice bouquet going in our bedroom. I love to gather them in from our own garden and try to be creative and use herbes and greenery as well as flowers of every type. When the weather no longer permits gathering from the garden, a local florist has come to the rescue. You’ll be surprised at how affordable this can be when you are a return customer who does not expect something elaborate every time. Our florist even uses some “left over” fresh flowers and things for our bouquets and enjoys the challenge of making them simple and elegant…or just fresh and fun. Lovely! Thank you for spurring our thoughts about our special space!

I very much like your list. I recently just moved into a new one-bedroom apartment so we are sharing the bedroom with our son, too. I’m still organizing the bedroom in my mind and I’m considering moving my son’s toys out of the bedroom and into the living room where there is enough space.

I recently started making our beds every morning, it also gives me the “the bed is no longer awailable for snoozing” in the morning since i dont start work untill 11am.

  • Karen

I think I got it from my Grandmother but I prefer white cotton bedding. Lots of soft indirect light, no TV, and candles are musts.

  • http://pixiepages.blogspot.com pixie

The best thing I ever did was get rid of the alarm clock. I use the alarm on my blackberry but the berry is turned upside down on my nightstand so I don’t see any light and the sound is turned off so I don’t think of any email coming in in the middle of the night.

Gorgeous bed, Emily! It all looks so peaceful yet so warm and inviting. =) I like to keep a notebook beside me, so I can jot down notes instead of fretting…

i agree with it all…would just add fresh flowers of some sort all the time, i.e., even one rose bud in a mini vase….love it!

trying to make our bed every morning – its so lovely!! i love your style, your willingness to post each day about your adventures. its a beautiful world that you have been given. thank you for sharing.

Another rule of the bedroom I’ve heard is to keep it free of any photos of your kids. They likely infiltrate the rest of the house – as they should – but even parents deserve an oasis that belongs only to {ahem} the two of them.

  • http://www.miasuraya.com Mia

Just the same things I believe in, except that I still keep my laptops inside my room (LDR sucks).

I also make it a point to sweep and vaccume my room every now and then. It makes a difference!

Sigh. Marz, there is no reason to insult Emily. If you disagree with her taste, maybe you should start your own blog, or find another one that suits you more.

Chaos at my bedroom. Should do something about it, but when I go there I have no strengh even to move, just go on a bed and sleeeeeeep.

Thanks for sharing Emily. I believe in a lot of these. I never thought of not having a clock in the room. Well, I don’t have a clock but I do keep a phone by my bed and every night whenever I wake up I will look at it to see if I have a message or see what time it is and how much sleep I have left. Which is the worst because I feel like after then I just keep waking up! : /
I lovee the new layout by the way. It has been awhile since I have visited your blog.

Going TV-less is excellent. Television disrupts sleep and can get distracting!

I just wanted to take the time to thank you for this post. I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately and moved my clock from my bedside table…I sleep much, much, much better now. And making our bed in the AM really gets the day off to a great start!

Again – thanks & look forward to your book.

Love to know sources where you care to give them… especially the bedspread.

We’d been looking for a solid gray or silver bedspread (not too girly, not too manly) and haven’t come across anything perfect so in the meantime settled for something less than ideal in the meantime, but I’d love to know where yours is from!

Hi Emily, I like Cath Kidston and the patterns they make. Are you going to stick to this neutral tone to your bedroom throughout the year? I’d love to see what you would do with patterns (like the homely summery Cath Kidston ones).
