How I Wear My Hair Naturally

For years, I wasn't comfortable wearing my hair naturally. In the off chance that I wouldn't blow it dry, I'd make sure to slick it back into a messy bun, always too self conscious to deviate from my typical style. But over the years, I've gotten better not only at embracing my natural waves, but also mastering the steps for ensuring it's frizz-free, tousled and low-maintenance. As part of my collaboration with Dove, here's how I create a natural style:

Items needed: Wide-tooth comb, Dove Nourishing Hair Treatment, a loose hairband, Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray

Step 1: Immediately after washing and conditioning my hair, I wrap it in a towel to absorb some of the moisture (I have a ton of hair, so this step really speeds up the drying time).

Step 2: Using a wide-tooth comb, I gently brush my hair, starting at the tips and working my way up. The goal isn't to get it smooth and sleek, but rather just to get rid of any snarls.

Step 3: I use three pumps of Dove Nourishing Hair Treatment and work from the mid section of my hair down to the tips. This helps my hair feel silky once it's dried and reduces frizz.

Step 4: I spray six squirts of beach spray around my hair and scrunch it slightly so that it looks a bit tousled.

Step 5: Then I pull it back into a tight bun (this helps control the frizzy sections around my face), get dressed and apply my make-up. This takes me roughly ten minutes, at which point, I take out the bun.
