Baubled Brooch How-To

September 21st, 2011

As a huge fan of Tom Binns’ neon necklaces, and all of the subsequent DIY interpretations that followed, I wanted to try out the hand-painted-jewel technique for myself (just use regular nail polish). I wasn’t sure I’d have the patience to finish an entire necklace, so I opted to work with a vintage brooch that I picked up at the flea market this past weekend. And as a little twist on the day-glo classic, I chose peacock-inspired jewel tones for my brooch that I plan on pinning onto vintage scarves (as seen here), bags, and blazer pockets.

{The three brooches I found at the Melrose Trading Post}

{Ready to start painting the first brooch}

{I liked the effect of two coats for a more opaque look}

{The three polishes I used for my peacock-inspired brooch}

{Pinned onto a vintage scarf and then wrapped around my bag’s handle}

    It’s a very cool idea and the result is beautiful!

    But I think I could not have painted the brooches, because they are already good-looking without the colour.

    Currently working as a volunteer at a female and child health NGO in Indonesia. The jewelry-making group is always looking for new ways to design their beaded brooches for charity bazaars, so I’m definitely sharing the nail-polish idea with them. Thanks for proving those of us overseas with your LA creativity! :)

    Awesome tutorial! I have been using nail polish for alot of touch ups too! I use it to cover up scruffs and scratches on shoes. For instance, if I have a pair of black shoes that has scratches I would cover it up with black nail polish. It does the trick perfectly =)

    I used to use nail polish to paint everything. I still have a dresser that I painted the knobs with assorted blues. I remember my father being so upset with my creativity.

    What a great idea! Painting brooches with nail polish? Totally genius! And your nails look fantastic in the photo too. Anything that involves being creative is right up my alley and my friends who attend FIDM are all into arts and crafts too.
