Balthazar’s French Onion Soup

September 25th, 2012

I have a major weakness for French brasseries and Balthazar in New York is one of my all-time favorites. I remember the first time I ever went – it was in September a few years back and my husband surprised me by taking the red-eye flight from L.A. the night before. He arrived on a drizzly morning and we walked through Soho for a cozy brunch. The tiled floors, the bustling waiters, the warm interior – the whole place just felt electric and the food was just as comforting. I ordered the french onion soup and loved it so much that I soon after bought the Balthazar cookbook just so that I could make it from home as often as I pleased (I even bought these classic bowls that can withstand the heat of the oven). Any kind of soup that involved a toasted piece of bread, a gooey layer of cheese, and a tangy broth is a winner in my book.

I absolutely love Balthazar. A little piece of parisian heaven in Manhattan. If you ever happen to be in North Jersey you have to make a stop at their bakery (its in Englewood). Not only are their goods slightly cheaper, but they have an amazing window overlooking their entire baking operation. If you are lucky you will get to have one of their croissants straight out of the oven. I just try not to look at the mountain (literally) of butter they have sitting in the middle of the room.

I’ve been to Balthazar’ in Soho and didn’t care for it much, my food was just mediocre and over priced so I was underwhelmed but this looks delicious, maybe I was just ordering the wrong thing!

I cannot wait to make this for my dad’s birthday dinner! I bought the same bowls from Crate and Barrel :) I also shared this recipe with my blog readers today on my blog– in a beer pairing guide. I think this would be a cozy combo with some pumpkin spiced ale!
