Back to Black

lbds.jpg

Since I share a relatively small closet with my boyfriend, excuses are often made for why I “need” certain things.  I can get pretty creative when it comes to these reasons, but in regards to black dresses, no explanation is necessary.   They’re such a wardrobe essential and I’m crazy for all of the structural elements from this season (especially when paired with embellished tights like the ones here).  These are a few of my favorite LBDs that are anything but boring.

1. Topshop, $80
2. Elizabeth & James, $495
3. ABS, $196
4. See by Chloe, $555
5. Forever 21, $22.80
6. Alice + Olive, $365

Will you be embracing this trend?  If so, which is your favorite?

2 and 5 are my favorites. gotta love the huge price difference between the two.

2 Jen Tarte { 09.02.09 at 2:01 am }

#5 is my favorite. :)

3 Pauline { 09.02.09 at 3:23 am }

loving no. 1 n 2!

4 Amanda K { 09.02.09 at 3:57 am }

Love the Elizabeth & James dress.

5 Brooke { 09.02.09 at 4:14 am }

I love number 1!

6 Karishma { 09.02.09 at 4:25 am }

Love #5, and then 3. 1′s pretty good too. never been a fan of the cutout style of 6 or the neckline of 2, and i bet 4 would look fantastic on you…. it’s the kind of dress that looks amazing on super skinny ppl and frumpy on everyone else. :)

7 laura trevey { 09.02.09 at 4:29 am }

I heart number 5 and that is by far the least expensive!!
Everyone needs a black dress, right?

8 mish d. { 09.02.09 at 4:53 am }

I looove #1! I’ve been looking for a minidress with strong shoulders and that is the perfect one at a budget.

9 Brianne { 09.02.09 at 5:07 am }

I really like the one from Forever 21. I might need to check it out.

10 wana { 09.02.09 at 5:18 am }

i love number 1, 3 and 6. y is see by chloe so darn expensive tho?
*shakin head* lol

11 kelly { 09.02.09 at 5:24 am }

I’m so thankful my boyfriend and I don’ t have to share a closet. He usually gets the other closets in the house or apartment where we live – bottom line he only hangs a few things and I gave him a wardrobe for his folded clothing so I tell him he’s NOT allowed to complain ;) I love #4 it’s amazing!

12 paula { 09.02.09 at 5:53 am }

great black dresses. such a staple.

13 OnlyOneAce { 09.02.09 at 5:57 am }

Wow!

14 The Lil Bee { 09.02.09 at 6:03 am }

I am the same way with black dresses and, believe it or not, white jackets. I seem to have so many in my closet. My favorite of this bunch is #4.

15 Lauren From Texas { 09.02.09 at 6:07 am }

#1 has a “sexy Star Wars” thing going on… haha. I like it!

16 Sanne { 09.02.09 at 6:15 am }

Today I typed in your adress, whilst listening to ‘Back to Black’ from Amy Winehouse, realising I haven’t been here for a long time. Such a coincidence happened when your most recent post is named ‘Back to Black’.

Maybe a sign I should come here way more often! :)

17 Sal { 09.02.09 at 6:16 am }

That ABS dress is amazing – love the shoulder detailing.

18 Ela { 09.02.09 at 6:44 am }

I adore the Chloe peasant dress, and F21 number, who would’ve guessed? Love the ruffled tiers.

p.s. love the outfit in your last post.

19 Snapshot Fashion { 09.02.09 at 6:51 am }

love them all! my faves are #2 and #3.

20 Anna { 09.02.09 at 6:59 am }

who could say no to an LBD? you’ll wear it forever to anything and it will always be a good choice. in my mind, that ability is priceless.

21 Talk Pretty To Me { 09.02.09 at 7:00 am }

Love black dresses! No. 3 & 4 are my favs. And you are def. right you can never have too many black dresses.

I’m completely in love with the strong shoulder trend. I’d pick number 1! I heard Zara is coming out with the strong-shouldered blazers– gotta hit them up when the Fall line comes out!

23 Amber { 09.02.09 at 7:05 am }

That Chloe dress would be so so good with a wide belt and a pair of your black super high heels!

24 Pretty Little World { 09.02.09 at 7:20 am }

Black dresses are great because the right one can be worn all year long — I like something that doesn’t have too much detail on it, so I can throw on a blazer or cardigan in the winter and not feel like I’m covering up the prettiest parts of the dress.

25 Heather { 09.02.09 at 7:23 am }

How can you pick just one? But of couse the dresses I love MOST are the most expensive…typical. :)

26 Jacqueline { 09.02.09 at 7:34 am }

love black dresses! a girl can never have too many!

Number FIVE baby! All the way! :)

28 Rachel { 09.02.09 at 7:37 am }

Of course I would love the one that cost $495 bucks. Great choices!

29 Maddy { 09.02.09 at 8:08 am }

Loving #5! Surprised it’s the least expensive out of the bunch. Usually, I’m always drawn to the pricier pieces. BTW, just discovered your blog & I love it! I immediately added it to my favorites :)

30 mariela { 09.02.09 at 8:12 am }

1 and 3 are my favorites! but i’m especially loving #1 and it’s price tag :)

31 Jess { 09.02.09 at 8:19 am }

i <3 #5. and forever 21 :) who would have guessed that was the cheapest dress of the bunch!

33 K @ Blog Goggles { 09.02.09 at 8:24 am }

Haha, of course I immediately zero in on the most expensive one :)

And I feel your pain – somehow my boyfriend and I ended up with equal-sized closets. I have to sneak things into his (usually with the dry cleaning) just so mine doesn’t explode.

34 CHICMUSE { 09.02.09 at 8:25 am }

BUT LOVE ALL

35 Vivian { 09.02.09 at 8:42 am }

I’m usually always dressed in black (or grey), so this is perfect. I’m dying for the E&J one, but unless I skip paying rent for the next month, it won’t be mine, haha. I wouldn’t mind the Top Shop one, though.

36 Heather Clark { 09.02.09 at 8:44 am }

I love the See by Chloe….i have this horrible way of always picking out the most expensive one in the bunch as my favorite

37 KPeach { 09.02.09 at 9:03 am }

That Alice and Olivia is super great!

38 whoorl { 09.02.09 at 9:14 am }

Whhhhhhhyyyy is my favorite one ALWAYS the most expensive??

39 Serg Riva { 09.02.09 at 9:16 am }

42 Gracelikekelly { 09.02.09 at 9:48 am }

number 2 is soo cute! I’ve said this so many times, but black is my go to…I live in Hawaii and probably should have tons of color, but for whatever reason, I always end up in black!

43 Cafe Fashionista { 09.02.09 at 10:04 am }

Leave it to me to choose the most expensive piece – I need the Elizabeth & James. I also need a little black dress – I don’t have one, and every girl should. :)

44 Liv { 09.02.09 at 10:09 am }

Oooohh… I could definitely find some space in the closet for #s 2 & 5!

45 Bargain Bex { 09.02.09 at 10:18 am }

1 and 5. Definitely. Gotta live up to my name and adore the inexpensive price tags :)

46 southern hostess { 09.02.09 at 10:29 am }

I love 2 and 5. You can never have too many black dresses, right?

47 Alyssa { 09.02.09 at 10:30 am }

Lovin the number 3 ABS dress by far! It looks so much better on the model than just by itself. I love it’s elegance and the form fitting shape! Although, I’m all for a bargain and the Forever 21 dress is awesome too!

48 Alyssa { 09.02.09 at 10:33 am }

I Love #3′s ABS dress by far!!! SO elegant and form fitting! It looks so much better on the model! Although, I’m all game for a bargain… the Forever 21 dress is awesome too!

49 sarah { 09.02.09 at 10:53 am }

i was trying to pick a favorite, it’s too hard, i love them all, #4 would be my everyday go to:)

I love each and every piece. Great finds!

51 Colleen { 09.02.09 at 11:50 am }

The Elizabeth and James and the See by Chloe are my favorites, but sadly I have no budget for them. I understand sharing the closet with a bf…we moved in together 3 months ago and he is still in shock over how much room I need

52 Joan { 09.02.09 at 11:51 am }

The topshop dress is the best, hands down.

53 Karen { 09.02.09 at 12:02 pm }

I have stared at the Topshop and Forever 21 dresses for longer than I care to admit. The F21 was out of my size when I first saw it a few days ago.

Did you get any of these listed?

Karen x

54 Rachel (Heart of Light) { 09.02.09 at 12:24 pm }

Ouch. I love number 4, which also happens to be the one most out of my price range!

55 The Pinky Files { 09.02.09 at 12:53 pm }

UGH, I have been on a never-ending quest to find a perfect LBD, and nothing works. I guess I am too damn picky. I am liking #5 though, I should try it next time I am at F21.

56 Wendy { 09.02.09 at 1:01 pm }

I want 4 & 5!

57 thebeautyfile { 09.02.09 at 1:05 pm }

I am the biggest fan of the LBD…in fact, I hardly have any more BDs that aren’t B. I am crazy about #1. I think with a great pair of heels I could feel ridiculously sexy in that!

58 Meegan { 09.02.09 at 1:09 pm }

Of course my favorite is #4 because of course, it is the most expensive of the lot. Champagne taste, Prosecco budget.

59 erin { 09.02.09 at 1:23 pm }

i LOVE the TopShop one! (and practically EVERYTHING TopShop) I’d be concerned that the shoulders would make me look a little Kim Kardashian-esque in her latest (goth) photoshoot.
Can’t go wrong with Elizabeth and James though. Or F21.

60 The Consummate Hostess { 09.02.09 at 1:23 pm }

Oh I really must have that fabulous Elizabeth & James number!

61 Sweetshelle { 09.02.09 at 2:42 pm }

Of course the one I love (#2) is one of the most expensive ones! And I really need a black dress for work at the Emmy red carpet. But my work only gives us a dress allowance of $75 :(

62 Heather { 09.02.09 at 2:45 pm }

#1 and #5! I guess I have cheap taste since I choose the 2 least expensive ones! haha
http://underfundedheiress.blogspot.com/

63 Keep Calm & Carry On { 09.02.09 at 2:48 pm }

Ooh, I love the Elizabeth and James one (typical), and #5 is sex in a dress. Sadly, padded shoulders fall under “things that make me look stupid,” but I’m sure the trend will look great on you :)

Btw, I just did a post on LBD’s last week! Check it out here:http://keepcalmandcarryonblog.com/2009/08/black-magic/

66 Melissa { 09.02.09 at 4:29 pm }

I wore mostly pink today, which is probably the exact opposite of this trend. But I love #5! :)

67 breezy { 09.02.09 at 4:34 pm }

that chloe dress needs to come live in my closet. hurry up fall!

68 Tiers of Joy { 09.02.09 at 5:06 pm }

The See by Chloe dress you’ve featured is positively stunning! I can just imagine it paired with funky tights and rugged boots … Adorable!

69 RJ { 09.02.09 at 5:30 pm }

#1 by Topshop! It’s so chic and definitely Balmain inspired with the shoulders. For those who can’t afford Balmain, like me!, the Topshop one will definitely suffice

70 Leta { 09.02.09 at 5:31 pm }

Love all of these picks. You have AMAZING taste. Check out Spoons and Balloons!

71 freckles and fringe { 09.02.09 at 5:50 pm }

I actually love them allllll!

74 Wrecked Stellar { 09.02.09 at 9:14 pm }

75 Kate { 09.02.09 at 9:36 pm }

I saw the Alice & Olivia cutout dress at Neiman’s the other sweet and fell hard. I need that in my closet asap!

76 jamieofalltrades { 09.02.09 at 10:46 pm }

Great round up. 2,3,5 are my faves.

77 Little Red Book { 09.03.09 at 12:08 am }

78 Helena { 09.03.09 at 1:06 am }

I own number 5 and was so pleased not only with the price but with the fit. It is so comfortable, yet it looks like it was tailored specifically for your body!
