A Good Cry

July 19th, 2012

A couple of weeks ago I was feeling off. I couldn’t quite articulate what was wrong, but I just didn’t feel like myself and wasn’t sure what would make me feel better. I pride myself in usually knowing exactly what I need – whether it’s a night out with girls, a great meal with my husband, or some time alone reading in bed. But this particular weekend, nothing sounded appealing. That was, until I curled up on my couch to watch Legends of the Fall, one of my favorite movies. The soundtrack alone makes my throat tighten and within minutes, I was crying. It was as if my body craved that release, even though the stress I had been dealing with didn’t exactly merit tears. But by the time the end credits rolled, some twenty-used-tissues later, I felt back to normal. I was almost overtly enthusiastic and it became clear that I simply needed a good cry.

Legends of the Fall probably tops my list of movies that make me cry (followed closely by Rudy, E.T., and Good Will Hunting). I’d love to know – what’s your favorite tear jerker?

“The Bridges of Madison County”… I bawl like a baby. without fail. every. single. time.

Philadelphia – it came out right as my beloved Uncle Bernard told us he had AIDS. I think I sat in my chair in the movie theater crying for at least 15 minutes after the movie had ended. What Dreams may Come, Stepmom, Beaches, Up, Schindler’s List. Oh and I can’t even watch Marley & Me anymore since my cat Stella died last fall.

  • Katy

    Steel Magnolias

  • Elly Hyland

ET!!! It’s one of my all time favourites, and it’s the only film that makes me cry every single time! A classic X

I was so happy to read your post yesterday as I was feeling exactly the same. And It was nice to know that I wasn’t alone… ;-)
In the end I went for a quite evening talking with my man followed by a movie, not really a tear jerker though (Dreamers). But at the end of that evening I felt like myself again.

But usually when I’m like that I prefer to go for cheer me up series or movies such as Sex and The City, Friends, Legally Blonde (how lame, I know!) or anything with strong women in it…

Ps: Driving miss Daisy always gets my tears!

    Glad you feel better!

Forest Gump. And it’s on tv Alll. The. Time. And clearly, then I have to watch it, no matter where in the channel flipping I caught it. As soon as Jenny comes back into his life -every time- I could flood my house I’m crying so hard.

I have those moments as well when a good cry just does the trick. Normally I only like to watch action/crime type of movies or TV show, but one night The Notebook was on TV and I watched it. OMG! I think I cried so hard, I got a headache and went through a box of kleenex. Lol.

Oh dear… The Notebook. I have almost made it through without crying at the end, but I just can’t. A lot of movies make me cry though, a lot of things in general make me cry. And I need a good cry every now and again (My boyfriend doesn’t understand, but I warned him before he moved in with me, it happens!!!!! :) )

  • Alice

Sommersby with Richard Gere was a great tearjerker! One of those movies that I randomly came across on the tv and have never forgotten.

EWell I must tell you that Philadelphia and Schindler s List were two movies that a long time ago, I watched one after another the same day and it was hard. The big fish. The Notebook. Sleepless in seattle. ET. That one with meg ryan and nicholas cage City of angels is soooo sooo romantic and painfull. But I must say that the movies that make me cry a lot! But oceans of crying, are those where something unusually unespected and wonderfull happens to somebody. There was this movie with Michael Keaton and Nicole Kidman, that was just a lesson for all those people that doesn t appreciate the gift of life, and the blessing of our loving and caring people. That movie is just unbearable I think everybody could choak crying with that one. And the first time that I watched it, I was at my grandmothers house by the beach in the country I live (uruguay south america) and I had there a balcony on my bedroom, and as the night was full of stars, one of my bests friends came to sleepover and watch movies, so we put the bed outside the balcony and the tv and we started watching that movie. She falled asleep, so I went through it alone, sitting on the bed trying not to choke with my everything that was pooring out my face, nose, mouth. When I came up I realized that from the street everybody could see me crying in a bed with a tv at the balcoy, crying superoutloud! But that movie is sooo inspireing, is just beautiful. Now I never watch drama movies. That movie, I can t evn talk about it. Y

I LOVE Legends of the Fall, I think I was only 12 when I saw it ( wow now that I have a kid 12 is a bit too young) but you do have to be in a certain mood to watch, so I totally get what you were saying. I also swore I’d name my first born Tristan, but unfortunately my hubby wasn’t too keen.

A Walk to Remember!! A very good movie and a total tear jerker!! Love your site!

  • rebbi

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly…tears from minute 1

  • kate

I sometimes cry at the end of When Harry Met Sally because it’s so perfect; haven’t we all wished at some point that the loveable jerk would come around and say exactly the right thing?

Also I find certain Sex & the City episodes especially poinant-(spoiler alert!) like when Miranda’s mother died or when Charlotte gave Carrie her old engagement ring so that Carrie could afford her apartment’s downpayment.

  • Marcela

I cry easily with most of the movies mentioned here but two that really open the gate are Finding Neverland and Men of Honor. Cry like a baby.

  • Adler

I cry at just about everything, but I too love “Legends of the Fall” and another great favorite is “A River Runs Through It” along with “Like Water for Chocolate” with plenty of tissue arms-distance.
