A Good Cry

July 19th, 2012

A couple of weeks ago I was feeling off. I couldn’t quite articulate what was wrong, but I just didn’t feel like myself and wasn’t sure what would make me feel better. I pride myself in usually knowing exactly what I need – whether it’s a night out with girls, a great meal with my husband, or some time alone reading in bed. But this particular weekend, nothing sounded appealing. That was, until I curled up on my couch to watch Legends of the Fall, one of my favorite movies. The soundtrack alone makes my throat tighten and within minutes, I was crying. It was as if my body craved that release, even though the stress I had been dealing with didn’t exactly merit tears. But by the time the end credits rolled, some twenty-used-tissues later, I felt back to normal. I was almost overtly enthusiastic and it became clear that I simply needed a good cry.

Legends of the Fall probably tops my list of movies that make me cry (followed closely by Rudy, E.T., and Good Will Hunting). I’d love to know – what’s your favorite tear jerker?

Legends of the Fall is such a good movie, and so, so, so sad. My movies to cry to…hmmm more like I like to watch sappy Youtube videos and cry over them.!

  • Angela

I cry a bit with most movies posted but the #1 movie that made me BAWL was:

    I AM SAM

Cried so hard on the plane the two people next to me had to ask me if I was ok! I just pointed to the screen!

  • Olivia K

My son’s name is Tristan after that movie!

  • Erin O’Brien

    The Shawshank Redemption… HANDS DOWN!

Legends of the Fall is one of my all-time favorite movies. I’ve seen it too many times to count, and it ALWAYS makes me cry. The first time I ever watched it, I watched the whole thing and then replayed it right after it ended. Such an amazing film :)

I’m a sucker for black and white films so…. Camille, So Proudly We Hail, and Pride of the Yankees

  • Bloomaglow

A walk to remember and My sister’s keeper

Thank you, Emily, for sharing. I agree with you completely about how it feels to have a good cry. I always cry when I watch the movie “The Way we Were” with Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford. That final scene in front of The Plaza Hotel when she gently pushes his hair to the side before they say good bye is too much for me. I start sobbing and I can’t stop. Take care! Melissa

    Hi!

I love Legends of the Fall. My son is actually named Tristan after Brad Pitt’s character.

One of my all time tear jerkers is Steel Magnolias. I have seen it probably one hundred times yet every time I watch it I cry like it is the first.

Also, now being a mom, Toy Story 3 does the same thing to me. LOL!

Thanks for your honest post(s). Have a great day! and week!

Family Stone. I’ve never watched it without breaking down at the end. Always a good cry.

Because I am a Southerner, Steel Magnolias is my favorite goto when I feel down and need a good cry. And believe it or not, I do live in a small town where they ask”And what was your maiden name, Dear?”

Love Actually – I watched it at least once a year and it always leaves me with a good cry and a good laugh. A great feel good movie!

  • Lisa

    Without a doubt Steel Magnolias!

  • elizabeth

without a doubt, finding neverland. johnny depp, kate winslet…and the scene where freddie highmore breaks down over his mother’s illness gets me every. single. time.

  • emily

The movie that I have watched more than once that always makes me cry is Forest Gump.

Other movies (that I have seen once or maybe twice because they are just so sad)
    1) The boy in the striped pajamas
    2) Sarah’s Key (a beautiful French movie about a young girl who escapes a concentration camp when the Germans occupied Paris). It is without a doubt one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. But it is so beautifully done…

Oh and who could forget Saving Private Ryan! One of my absolute favorites…

  • emily

    Oh and the Notebook!

  • Claribel

    The Flowers of War
    Sunshine

  • Nicole

    Without fail, The Notebook.

  • cassandra

Bridges of Madison County makes me cry every time. It’s my go-to to get the tears out.

  • Hannah

    About Schmidt

  • Cheryl Muscarella

The Family Stone. I lost my mother 12years ago, and I love the Christmas holiday, have 7 siblings, and am in lust with old homes. Put all of those things together, and this one does it for me.

I almost never cry during movies, but the one movie that left me crying like a baby was P.S. I Love You!
