This week was a good one. Each night we finished work at a decent time, put on music, and drank wine while we made dinner. After the Emmy Awards on Sunday, we also decided it was time to finally give Homeland a try and I’m so glad we did – it’s incredible. Last night’s signing was so fun and we capped off the night with some of my closest friends at Sotto. Tonight we’re staying in (ahem – finishing the first season of the aforementioned show) and tomorrow I’m heading down to Orange County for my last Southern California signing (details here). Have a great weekend!

I receive a lot of questions about what people should wear in the work place – how to incorporate trends, the key pieces that everyone should own, and those items on which it’s worth spending. I haven’t worked in a typical office for several years, but I’ve put together my list of 15 essential pieces that are a good starting point to building your work wardrobe.
I used to avoid tan-colored clothing since I felt that it washed out my (not exactly natural) blond hair. It’s kind of like that saying that redheads should avoid red, I suppose. But when I found this cashmere sweater (that’s on sale) that veered more towards burnt caramel, I gave it a try. I’m surprisingly into the slightly monochromatic look, especially when broken up with a bright lip.
I have a major weakness for French brasseries and Balthazar in New York is one of my all-time favorites. I remember the first time I ever went – it was in September a few years back and my husband surprised me by taking the red-eye flight from L.A. the night before. He arrived on a drizzly morning and we walked through Soho for a cozy brunch. The tiled floors, the bustling waiters, the warm interior – the whole place just felt electric and the food was just as comforting. I ordered the french onion soup and loved it so much that I soon after bought the Balthazar cookbook just so that I could make it from home as often as I pleased (I even bought these classic bowls that can withstand the heat of the oven). Any kind of soup that involved a toasted piece of bread, a gooey layer of cheese, and a tangy broth is a winner in my book.
