The Heart of the Matter

January 26th, 2012

{Heart garland to brighten up dreary afternoons}

For Valentine’s Day when I was a little girl, my mom would let me hang little heart-shaped lights in my room, which I’d methodically weave in and out through the slats in my trundle bed. Their red glow was soft and soothing and I loved to just lie in my bed and look up at them. It’s been years since I’ve had them, but when I came across the same set at CVS the other day, I knew I had to bring them home. It’s funny how something so insignificant brought back such nice memories, so along with my new heart-shaped headboard, here are a few of the other things that have been adding some color to my life.

Brunch Basics

I love the ritual of Sunday brunch. I rarely savor meals – instead, often finishing either breakfast, lunch, or dinner while working at my computer. But there’s something about a long, leisurely brunch that has turned into one of my favorite parts of the weekend. Since this past Sunday promised gray skies, but no rain, I pulled out my leather jacket to tone down a bright blouse and casual jeans.

Fried Chicken

January 24th, 2012

For the most part, the chicken we prepare around here is grilled or baked, but every once in a while, it’s fun to change things up a bit. Last weekend for a football-heavy Sunday, we made this recipe, which didn’t disappoint. The herbed oil added such a nice dimension and the chicken was tender with a crispy, crunchy skin. Sadly we can’t add this kind of dish to our weekly repertoire, but it’s nice to know there’s a fool-proof recipe out there for those slightly more indulgent meals.

Little details, like scalloped frame sunglasses, a nail ring, and leather sleeves, ensure that simple dressing never feels too plain.
