Cream of Tomato Soup + Grilled Cheese

September 20th, 2011

L.A. isn’t exactly known for its seasons, which was one of my biggest hesitations when I moved from San Francisco. I have a love/hate relationship with the perpetually warm weather, since it makes it difficult to embrace certain times of year that kind of need to be cold/chilly/below 72°. On Sunday night though, there was a drastic shift in temperature and within minutes, there was a chilly breeze moving through our place. I was planning on serving cream of tomato soup anyway (recipe here), but it was nice that we didn’t have to sweat through the meal. And since soup isn’t complete without a sandwich to anchor it, we made grilled cheese that brought me right back to my childhood.

This skirt fulfills pretty much all of my needs: a classic silhouette, in a neutral color, with leather pockets. I’ve owned tons of black pencil skirts over the years, but I love that the edgy details keep it from feeling stuffy. This bag was a sort of impulse buy in New York after my previous carry-on (a straw tote from high school) literally unraveled as I boarded the plane. Thankfully this one manages to look chic, even when stuffed with every technology device I own, plus a slew of tangled necklaces and sunglasses.

Five Things

There are times when I think I would love living in New York. I’m a much more adventurous version of my normal self and find myself exploring new places, going out to fun restaurants instead of staying in, and walking everywhere instead of constantly driving around. But inevitably, I always cram in far too many things in too short of time and find myself missing home – the quiet neighborhood where we live, my local coffee shop, and our little family. I’m heading back to L.A. this afternoon and can’t wait.

Black and Blue

Ever since I pared down my closet a few weeks ago, getting dressed has been so much easier. Instead of sorting through a bunch of pieces that I no longer love, or that have some sort of issue (i.e. didn’t fit/had a stain/broken zipper), I now know I’ll only find great basics that work in a variety of ways. We shot these pictures last weekend in L.A. and I packed the entire outfit for New York since each piece (a classic blazer, a bow blouse, a leather skirt, statement heels, and a bright clutch) is so versatile and can be styled countless ways.
