Downtown Discoveries

Madewell Dress, Cuff made by my mom, Chanel Heels

I tend to be pretty stubborn when it comes to trying new things – especially when those things include driving downtown. I’d heard nothing but rave reviews about Bottega Louie, but I was discouraged by the idea of maneuvering around one-way streets and finding a decent parking spot. That all changed this past weekend, when we got dressed up for Sunday brunch and made the fifteen minute trek downtown. It’s good to change up your routine every now and again – especially if the reward for stepping outside of your comfort zone includes a spicy bloody mary and killer egg sandwich.

Five Things

{Cutest idea ever: Whole Foods’ ice cream cone cookies}

My fiancé and I have been working a lot this week and we’ve barely seen each other. While it’s not ideal, I’m not opposed to the notion of missing each other just a bit. It’s funny what a little space can do – it makes me think about things in a different way, including the lost traditions from when we first met. Every morning he used to send me a “song of the day” that he thought I would enjoy. Sometimes I’d heard them before and other times I was pleasantly surprised, but I looked forward to it every day. So here’s to rekindling lost traditions, celebrating the little things and, of course, your own song of the day. Joe Purdy – San Jose.

{Two new (to me) cheeses that complement each other nicely}

I wore this out for a double date this past weekend for a casual dinner at our favorite sushi spot. The outfit had morphed throughout the day – starting with my chambray shirt tucked into paint-splattered shorts and canvas slip-ons. Instead of changing entirely, I dressed it up with a jeweled bib necklace, a flouncy skirt, and my favorite heels.

Irresistible Chocolate Chip Cookies

July 20th, 2011

I have an entire section dedicated to cookies I’ve baked for my blog, but I’ve never featured one of my absolute favorites: classic chocolate chip. For years I tried different recipes, hoping to find the ideal version – with a light crispness on the outside, a chewy middle, laced with just enough chocolate.  I’ve had the best luck with this recipe  – with only a couple minor modifications (I use Valrhona chocolate disks that I chop into pieces and sprinkle on some Maldon sea salt at the end for a slightly salty finish). The results are everything you’d hope for in a cookie and make for an easy dessert to whip up for any type of summer soiree.
