Five Things

June 24th, 2011

{Morning ritual: coffee + newspaper by the pool}

Our trip to Costa Rica has been incredible. The people, the beaches, the food…I want to pack it all up in my suitcase and bring it home. We’re here for two more days, with a packed schedule that includes zip-lining, coffee tasting and some community outreach. I look forward to sharing more about my experiences next week. In the meantime, here are five (Costa Rican) things currently making me happy.

Baby Blues

J.Crew Hat, Elizabeth and James Sunglasses, J.Crew Top, Rebecca Minkoff Bag, American Apparel Skirt, Vintage Belt, Christian Louboutin Heels, Maybelline ‘Coral Crush’ Lipstick

I love combining different colors in one outfit (like aqua + orange, pink + red, blue + purple), but there’s something about a monochromatic look that always feels fresh. This ribbed royal blue skirt has such a nice weight to it and is balanced out nicely by a worn-in striped tee. Since the two blues don’t match perfectly, it doesn’t feel too matchy-matchy, especially when paired with gold shoes that are my equivalent of ruby slippers.

How To: Braided Bun

June 22nd, 2011

I’m all about easy hairstyles for the beach that are quick, but still stylish. I’ve been doing some sort of variation on a braided bun for years, since it keeps the hair out of my face and at the end of the day, I have tousled waves that require no extra work. The best part is that it’s not supposed to look too perfect, so you can just throw it together, put on a hat and head out the door!

Mermaid Nails

June 21st, 2011

For our trip to Costa Rica, I wanted fun nails that had an almost tropical vibe. I went back to Marie Nails (where I got this glittery combination) and got a bright tangerine color with graduated gold sparkles on just my ring fingers (which you can see here). It felt just festive enough and I couldn’t wait to try out different combinations. Luckily my friend Marta was up for the challenge and let me paint her nails a pale greenish blue with aquamarine-colored glitter. It’s quickly become my new favorite way to add a bit of sparkle to plain polish.

{Essie’s Mint Candy Apple & Martha Stewart’s Aquamarine Glitter}

{Paint two coats of the nail polish}

{Add top coat along the bottom half of the nail}

{Dip a separate brush into top coat and then into the glitter}

{Apply glitter to the bottom half of your nail}

{End result}
