Guest Room

May 24th, 2011

Our guest room has remained practically unfurnished since we moved in. The problem is that it’s essentially two rooms in one – there’s an awkward little add-on that used to hold the bed, which left the rest of the room feeling disproportionately empty.

Yesterday I decided to move things around a bit and brought in the vintage settee and gold pouf from my office and propped the lamps (that had previously been in the living room) up on the glass console under the window. I scoured a local thrift store for old suitcases (for $15 each) and stacked three on top of each other and added a beveled mirror on top. It’s a fun alternative to a nightstand and felt immediately pulled together with just a few guest room essentials (water carafe, fresh flowers and a lamp).

Next steps: new bedding, art, a headboard.

Candy Colors

Martin + Osa Necklace, Gifted Equipment Blouse, J Brand Jeans, Zara Shoes, Reiss Clutch

Last night, while getting dressed, I realized we probably wouldn’t have time to snap pictures on our way to dinner. So instead, we documented the process of getting ready while at home. I found these heels at Zara last week and they’re exactly what I’ve been looking for in a shoe this entire season – boldly colored (with red, orange and pink) and clunky. I threw on a rather androgynous outfit, with my new favorite oversized blouse, jeans and air-dried hair, for a quick date on a chilly night.

Five Things

{A sparkly brooch makes an old scarf feel new again}

Last night we saw “Beauty Culture,” a photo exhibit at The Annenberg Space, that explores how feminine beauty is defined in modern culture. And the photographs were stunning – from the portraits of Giselle and Cindy, to the breast cancer survivor who confidently posed in the nude. It’s a nice reminder that while trivial things like nail polishes and fancy shoes are fun, there are bigger things that can truly shift your focus. And that, to me, is beautiful.

{Pretty polishes that even have fun, ice cube-like bottles}

{My first ever house plant. It’s survived five days thus far.}

{Striped tape makes everything prettier – even a boring grocery list}

Pinspiration

{weddings}

I’m constantly tagging images online, ripping out pages of magazines and filing things away that I’ve deemed as inspirational. The problem with this method is that it quickly becomes cluttered chaos that overwhelms instead of inspires. Enter: Pinterest. It’s like your own virtual inspiration board that you fill with photographs and organize into your favorite categories. I’ve only just begun, but you can check out my other boards HERE.
