Memorial Day

May 31st, 2011

{Vintage glasses + Elizabeth and James Dress + Mexican Coca-Cola}

The long weekend was exactly what I needed. I started and finished a book (I finally got around to reading this and loved it), shared great meals with friends, played board games outside, and took advantage of the deserted city. Memorial Day weekend always feels like the beginning of summer and it sets the tone for late afternoon cocktails, tropical getaways (we have one at the end of June!) and a generally relaxed way of life for the next few months.

Five Things

May 27th, 2011

{Hooray flag for when we cross something off of our wedding to-do list}

I’m really looking forward to the holiday weekend since things have been particularly busy around here. Between several upcoming collaborations, my book, and wedding planning, I’ve realized just how important it is to take a break every once in a while. Though our Memorial Day weekend won’t be as packed as last year’s tour-of-Southern-California, I’ll be happy if there’s some BBQ involved and if I can squeeze in one late afternoon nap.

Geometric Locations

Though in all of these pictures it appears as though I chopped off my hair, I assure you I didn’t. I was just having a particularly awkward hair day that made a low bun pretty much my only option. I bought this top last week (I’m even more obsessed with the tank version) and fell for its geometric shapes and boxy cut. It will be perfect worn loose over cut-offs at the beach, but for the time being I knotted it and tucked it under (like I did with this top) to offset my tailored pants.

Chocolate-Dipped Pretzels

May 25th, 2011

I think homemade desserts almost always trump those bought at a store (unless, of course, baking is seriously not your calling). Sometimes it’s just hard to find the time to make something special that looks as good as it tastes. Chocolate-dipped pretzels have always been one of my favorite treats and because this week has turned out to be unexpectedly hectic, I decided to make something that didn’t even require an oven. I simply melted chocolate (white and milk), dipped in some pretzel rods and decorated them with some Memorial Day-inspired sprinkles.

*Bonus: when stacked in a tall glass or a hurricane vase, it makes for a pretty (and edible!) centerpiece.
