Five Things

{Miniature flags that line the fence for our party}

After a week of major deadlines, I’m ready for a carefree weekend filled with fun festivities. This morning I woke up early, bought some British-inspired pastries and curled up on my couch to watch the royal wedding. We’re holding our (slightly early) Cinco de Mayo party tomorrow and I can’t wait. We’ve been trying out different margarita recipes and so far, my favorite variation is made with grapefruit juice and balanced by some lime simple syrup. Luckily it’s supposed to be in the high 70s all weekend, so I couldn’t ask for anything else.

{New Gap shoes that feel prim and polished; love the little bows!}

{Lately I’ve been wearing nothing but a swipe of bright lipstick}

{Homemade grapefruit margaritas; a crisp take on a classic}

{Vintage clutches that are petite and sturdy; such a refreshing change}

Purple Haze

Express Jacket, Coach Sunglasses, Urban Outfitters Dress, Madewell Belt, Foley + Corrina Bag, Steve Madden Platforms, Michael Kors Watch, Dannijo Bracelet

I love looking at old images of my mom; when she had long hair, and dresses to match. Most of them were from the ’70s and dotted with beautiful floral patterns that I would kill to have in my closet today. I stumbled across this floaty dress last week at Urban Outfitters and took it home without even trying it on. It’s one of those pieces that’s perfect in its simplicity; with its subtle transparency and floaty layers that’s reminiscent of what my mom used to wear.

Chocolate Rum Cake

April 27th, 2011

I made my first frosted classic cake a month ago and it was one of the better things I’ve ever baked, but it took a lot of time to get just right. This past weekend I was in charge of making dessert for a dinner party and wanted something that looked and tasted special, but wouldn’t take the entire day to prepare. I went with my dad’s Chocolate Rum Cake (variation here); an insane merging of chocolate, butter, and rum that takes mere minutes to make and is one of the most decadent ways to end a meal.

Cosmetic Clutter

{before}

Given my love of cosmetics, you’d think that I’d have a bathroom drawer that rivaled Sephora in both its scope and organization. Definitely not the case. I even questioned whether or not to include my “before” picture, simply because it was so mortifying (confession: I even removed a few items before snapping the shot).

The other day it took me five minutes to locate a lip gloss, at which point I realized I had to clean things up. I owned doubles and triples of the same item; some of which had been dried up for years. There were eye shadows from college, pieces of trash and used Q-tips; in short, it was disgusting. I decided to create divided sections for eyes, lips, bronzers, cheeks and foundation/powders and only kept the items that I love and actually use.

{old dividers that I spray painted a glossy gold}

{Dividers for: powders, bronzers and eye make-up}

{Dividers for: lips, cheeks and skin; as well as a few other necessities}

P.S. You can see other organization posts here and here.
