Cupcakes and Cashmere

Five Things

March 25th, 2011

{Vintage Escada blazer; love that there’s an ‘E’ on the pocket}

Since I’m on a bit of a bold color kick, I was ecstatic when I found the above blazer (it even has striped lining!) at one of my favorite thrift stores. I’ve stopped into the little shop for months and found plenty of home goods, but had never checked out the clothes. It was the best $30 I’ve spent all year and I can’t wait to pair it with some of my sweeter dresses that have been desperate for this kind of schoolboy charm. In the meantime, here are a few other simple things currently making me happy.

{This cup and saucer that makes tea time so much more appealing}

{Seasonal produce that looks as pretty as it tastes}

{Rainy day activity: finally tackling the pile of magazines on my desk}

{My friend’s absurdly sweet “love” ring from XIV Karats}

Blending Brights

Zara Blouse and Skirt, Coach Bag, Dannijo Bracelet, Gifted Elizabeth and James Booties

I love neutral palettes and often find myself gravitating towards pretty peaches, understated nudes and creamy whites. Every once in a while though, I’m drawn to bold colors that make even more of an impact when paired together. I bought this top and skirt this week at Zara and though I had envisioned them separately (the top with high waisted jeans and the skirt with a loose white blouse), the combination of kelly green and bright pink was too fun to pass up.

Classic Chocolate Cake

March 23rd, 2011

I’ve made cupcakes dozens of times, but up until this past weekend, I had never baked a cake. It was one of those things that felt like such a process; it required pans I didn’t own, a lot of prep work and far too much time dedicated to watching it cool. This past Saturday though, was quiet and stormy; ideal for experimenting in the kitchen. I followed this recipe and couldn’t have been happier with the results. It was everything you hope for in a cake; it was moist and dense with an intense chocolate flavor, but without being cloying. In other words, a new classic.
