Summer Barbecue

June 24th, 2010

Even though we recently purchased our own grill, there’s nothing better than heading to a summer barbecue (bonus points if it’s at the beach).   I love the idea of wearing a retro-inspired crop top with classic cut-offs and finishing it off with the simplest of accessories.  Since it’s almost a guarantee that temperatures will drop drastically by the time you’ve moved onto the S’mores, a grandpa knit is infinitely chicer than an old sweatshirt pulled out of the trunk of the car.  Something I’ve done more times than I care to admit.

Lemon Bars

June 23rd, 2010

As a kid, bake sales were one of the greater pleasures in life.  I would collect nickels and dimes weeks in advance so that I could load up on as many brownies, Rice Krispie Treats and lemon bars as my savings allowed.   Lemon bars were always one of my favorites and the other day I realized that I had never made them myself.  I can now say that I’ve made them twice in the last day.  Not exactly by choice.  See, when the recipe said to let the crust cool completely before pouring on the cold lemon filling, that wasn’t open to interpretation.  Fast forward 12 hours later, and out came the most wonderfully tart lemon bars (recipe here), with just enough zing to warrant spending your entire savings in coins.

The Parker Palm Springs

June 22nd, 2010

{At The Lemonade Stand, an adorable place to order gourmet food (like Kobe Beef Hot Dogs) by the pool.}

This past weekend I had the pleasure of being put up at The Parker in Palm Springs.   Between the exquisite property (complete with fire pits, hammocks, pools and croquet courts), the decor (done by Jonathan Adler), the wonderful meals and excellent service, I would have been content to never return home.  We didn’t leave the property once throughout our stay and took full advantage of everything the hotel had to offer.

As extra incentive to experience your own getaway at The Parker, they’re extending an offer of 25% off your room rate for any 2-night stay between now and the end of summer (September 22, 2010).

Simply call 760.883.1966 by July 6th and mention “Cupcakes and Cashmere.”

{I loved eating breakfast out on our patio, complete with our own hammock.  I ordered blueberry pancakes with devonshire cream.}

{The citrus-colored scene at Norma’s is almost as great as the food.}

{How fun is this huge chess board?  I was obviously pretty enamored and spent entirely too much time here.}

{My deep tissue massage at the hotel’s spa, Palm Springs Yacht Club, was the perfect way to end a day spent in the sun.}

{Everything about our room was gorgeous, even the cherry red door.}

{Norma’s Doughnuts, with lemon custard and blueberry jam.}

{We took advantage of the Petanque court at dusk.}

{The lobby has such a great retro vibe, full of color and texture.}

{Since we couldn’t pick a favorite, we spent equal time at the chlorine-free saline pool and the jewel-box pool.}

Shades of Yellow

June 21st, 2010

Anthropologie Blouse, Mint Skirt, Madewell Belt, Marni Heels, J.Crew Necklace, Free People Sunglasses

When I pack for Palm Springs, there are hardly any neutrals in my suitcase.  I love to embrace the bright colors of the desert and dress accordingly in sunshiney yellows, vivid oranges with red lips at night.  The weather was hot and dry this weekend and I brought along some light blouses (here are some other options) as a chic alternative to the cotton cover-ups I lounged in by the pool.  I took a bunch of pictures of our beautiful stay that I’m still sorting through that I can’t wait to share tomorrow.

P.S. I want to wish a happy 30th anniversary to my parents who have been such wonderful examples of what true love and companionship truly is.
