Pretty Little Things

January 13th, 2010

The weeks following the holidays are always a bit tough.  The anticipation fades, morning mimosas are traded in for glasses of plain juice and the twinkling lights that illuminate the city are taken down.  In order to abstain from some of the daily disappointment that January brings, I’ve decided to focus on the pretty little things in my life.  Here were just a few of them that made me happy today.

Popovers with Strawberry Butter

January 12th, 2010

I’m what you’d call a bread addict.  Whether we’re talking about a warm, chewy bagel or a loaf of dark pumpernickel, I don’t discriminate.  Though they contain no yeast, popovers fall into this category and they’re at the top of my list.  For those of you that haven’t bitten into what’s essentially a piece of fluffy air, you’re really missing out.   I found the recipe on Orangette (adapted from The Bread Bible), and I must say, I was pretty impressed that they not only rose, but were light and flavorful.  To really bring it home, I whipped up some strawberry butter (by beating together 1/2 cup of butter with 1/2 cup strawberry preserves) and it was the perfect touch for an indulgent breakfast.

Something New, Something Old

DIY Chain Hair Band, Planet Blue Departure Top, H&M Trousers, Jenny Yuen Bag, Michael Kors Watch, Vintage Bracelet, Marni Heels

Dresses are usually my uniform of choice on weekends, since they require little effort and offer optimal comfort.  This top, with its sheer fabric and drapey cut, is one of the items I picked up at Planet Blue last week and I must have already incorporated it into four different outfits.  I finally got around to organizing my closet (it looks more like this again) and rediscovered a ton of old favorites, including these cropped trousers from H&M.  They’re a nice departure from jeans and more forgiving for those weekends when you manage to go out to eat for every meal.

Planet Blue

As I’ve mentioned several times before (here and here), I’m a huge fan of the boutique Planet Blue.  They’re always stocked with the most incredible party dresses, jewel-colored tops and eclectic jewelry and yesterday marked the beginning of their 7-day long sale in the flagship Beverly Hills store.  I was invited to come check out the merchandise, all of which was 75% off, and found several pieces I cannot wait to wear (pictures to come next week).  The best part?  The sale will be moving locations in the upcoming weeks to their other stores so I might just have to hop down to their Montana Avenue location on January 16th to scope out their new stuff.

P.S. Not in the L.A. area?  You can still check out their sale merchandise online here.
