The last time I wore a romper, I was at an age when wearing a skirt was unacceptable. Therefore, I was consistently proving to the boys in my 2nd grade class that they were in fact, shorts, and not a skirt. For this reason, I’ve been hesitant to embrace the current trend, but with all of the cute options available, it might make for a nice alternative during the summer. T-Bags’ Solid Terry Romper, though technically a one-piece, looks more like a tube top paired with little white shorts. The gold buttons that cascade down the front add a little glamour to an otherwise casual ensemble, making this the perfect thing to throw on over a bathing suit or to wear with embellished sandals on a warm night.

I first came across the clothing line, Built By Wendy, last week after a couple of co-workers came back to the office lugging armfuls of clothes from the store’s bi-annual sample sale. I was immediately hooked and made a special trip to her store on 3rd Street. Her line is simple and clean, and is founded on her aptitude for adding special detailing to every piece she makes. This Schoolgirl Dress is far from your popular Halloween costume, instead using tiny sequins in lieu of a collar and a thin strip of sparkle along the bottom. The unstructured, yet slim fit is a perfect date outfit and if paired with sky-high heels and lip gloss, will certainly play into the schoolgirl look, minus that whole knee-socks thing.

I don’t downplay the fact that I have a slight obsession with ruffles. Though they typically trim the bottoms of my dresses and make my necklines a touch sweeter, I never realized how they could truly transform a pair of otherwise plain sandals. Loeffler Randall’s Metallic Gathered T-Strap Sandals make such a dramatic statement with rouched straps in a unique rose gold leather. With coral painted toe-nails, they would undoubtedly play a huge role in my summer wardrobe, but due to their hefty price, the rest of my outfits would surely be lacking. That is why Urban Outfitters’ We Who See Petticoat Sandals are such a perfect alternative seeing as how they’re right in my price range and with little ruffled t-straps, my cravings would be completely satisfied.

Since I now have a decent collection of high-waisted jeans, I’m determined to find tops that are just as reliable. I’m all about balanced proportions though, and because my jeans adhere to the better-not-eat-too-much motto, I figure it’s best to wear looser fitting tops that I just can tuck in. Forever 21′s Aase Bubble Tunic, is exactly what I’m looking for with casual pleating, and rouching along the neckline. Though I’d most certainly tuck in this top with my high-waisted denim, it would also look good worn long with a belt and skinny jeans. Best of all, the simplicity of the top is a perfect canvas for accessorizing and ever since Forever 21′s accessories store opened at the Beverly Center, I’ve been paying visits on a weekly basis.
Below is one of my all-time favorite SNL videos that demonstrates that fine line between mom jeans and the current trend.
