I’m a big advocate for incorporating color into my wardrobe, and there’s no better time to do so during the warmer months of the year. With summer comes hot nights, tanned skin and lots of outdoor activities, which provides the perfect canvas for painting with vibrant hues. All rules go out the window for so-called clashing combinations, and I’ve included some my season’s favorites.
T-Bags is notorious for their intricate patterns and willowy silhouettes and the Off Shoulder Keyhole Dress makes for the perfect transitional outfit into the evening. The elastic banding at the top allows you to wear it around your shoulders and with just a bit of smudged eye liner and some simple gold hoops, this would be an ideal look for after dark. Plus, it’s now on sale in four different patterned options down from $202 to $60.60.
I’m a big proponent of clothing that can easily transition between seasons. Though I try to adhere to that motto most of the time, I would certainly make an exception for this Diane Von Furstenberg Greenpoint Tunic. The 70’s-inspired top, made up of a medley of emerald greens, has such a fantastically airy feel that is simply made for Summer.
Though this Chelsea Dress, from Rachel Pally, is exceptionally simple, I just love the tiered hemline and the sunflower color. Since it’s so sleek, it would be perfect to accessorize with some turquoise drop earrings and a low-slung purse.

Since blouses are far too formal for me, and white undershirts make me feel like I belong under the hood of a car, flowy tops are an exemplary alternative. Made of the sheerest of fabrics in fantastically forgiving shapes, they’re the perfect complement to all of the denim options that are resting comfortably in my closet.
The details of Forever 21’s Blooming Floral Blouse are exquisite. With simple flutter sleeves, a tie at the neck and a rouched waistline, I would tuck this in some ridiculously dark, high-waisted jeans.
Development’s Zanadu Flutter Sleeve blouse, though slightly out of my price range at $260, combines some of my favorite colors in a beautifully intricate silhouette. The silk camisole underneath is accented with a sheer chiffon layer that would look killer with skinny jeans and sky-high, patent leather pumps.

Kimchi Blue’s Ruffle Tieback Cami, with scalloped crochet and a ruffle-trimmed neckline, reminds me of vintage lingerie. The little white buttons that run down the front are so unapologetically feminine, that I think a loose-fitting pair of boyfriend jeans would keep these from looking too sugary sweet.

I have a long-running love affair with purple. When my mom allowed me to pick all new bedding for my college dorm room, I ended up sleeping in a mishmash of violets, lavenders and magentas, which was far from the tranquil setting I had imagined. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this regal color begs to be left untarnished and should be the sole focus of attention. Christina Applegate, Heidi Klum, and America Ferrera got it right when they recently walked separate red carpets in these show-stopping numbers. Though the onset of cool weather is still months away, I cannot wait to incorporate this mysterious color into my Fall wardrobe for a bit of added spice.
Forever 21’s Tie-Dye Scarf is such a wonderful throwback to the 60’s with a gradual darkening that ends in a fringed eggplant hue. I would throw this over a plain white top with caramel-colored boots.
This dress, whose inspiration comes from floral arrangements, appeals to my inner Princess. The elaborate sleeves on Tony Cohen’s Flutter Sleeve Dress would be tempered nicely with opaque black tights and heels.

These vintage Pirate Boots are exactly what I’ve been looking for to transitional all of my floral dresses into Fall. I love how they slouch just the right amount, yet still maintain their shape thanks to their shaft made of leather.

Vacations are always welcomed, but the act of traveling from one place to another is never fun. Though I detest airports, consistently over pack, and think that planes are the equivalent of arctic penitentiaries, I’ve acquired several techniques that make being away from home that much more comfortable.
What not to wear:
Though I realize my aversion to the Juicy Couture tracksuit is relatively extreme [see above for Elmo comparison], there do exist stylish alternatives that are equally as comfortable.
Additionally, convenience should always be top of mind. Since we’re required to now pat around in bare feet while heading through security, socks are a must. Any excess buckles, ties or zippers should also be avoided at all costs.
What to wear:
Since the temperatures in airports and air crafts are never predictable, layering is a must. My go-to outfit when traveling consists of stretchy leggings, a cotton top, a wrap sweater and athletic ballet flats.
DKNY’s Cozy Cardigan speaks for itself. The drapey fabric and asymmetrical hem allow for multiple styling options, including a make-shift (and sanitary) blanket on the plane, all while appearing casual and chic.
After reading in a recent magazine that Vera Wang lives in Danskin’s Supplex Ankle Leggings, I was immediately sold. Made of their Supplex fabric that doesn’t fade or pill, I like how they’re full-length since I think the mid-calf ones are past their prime.
Since running shoes are bulky and a hassle to un-tie, ballet flats are a perfect choice. Stella McCartney’s Thala are ideal for walking long distances and can even be folded up to easily fit into a crowded suitcase.
What are your travel musts?

I certainly would not consider myself an avid watcher of television, but when it comes to shows that are centered around fashion, I can become rather obsessed. While I’m eagerly anticipating the premiere of Project Runway tonight, I can’t help but look ahead to September 1st, when my beloved Gossip Girl returns.
I came across this picture today of Dan and Serena onset and felt like I had been reunited with two close friends (in a non-creepy sort of way). Even though they’re both clad in navy striped shirts, they still manage to epitomize completely different vibes. The tie-died effect and loose fit of Serena’s tank lends itself to a beachy vibe, wheras Dan maintains his preppy style even in a casual shirt. I certainly see couples that look as though they dressed in tandem, but I’m not sure how I feel about it.
If you had/have a significant other, would you be opposed to dressing so that your outfits complemented each other?

Immediately upon entering Old Navy’s website today, I was made aware that I can now purchase things from the other three sister sites (Banana Republic, Gap, and Piperlime) and pay only one $7 flat shipping rate. In order to celebrate, I decided to put together my favorite picks.
Gap: Striped twisted-neck sweater - Love the unexpected striped charcoal gray in a slim cut.
Old Navy: Ruffle Hem Dress - The perfect Summer party dress. I’d pair it with magenta heels.
Banana Republic: Elegant Stone Hinged Bangle - An antique-looking bracelet that will add such a nice dose of color to a neutral outfit.
Piperlime: Frye Paige Tall Buckle - An extremely versatile boot that I could pair just as seamlessly with a floral dress in Summer as I could with tucked in skinny jeans for Fall.

Diane Von Furstenberg’s been churning out her notoriously flattering wrap dresses since the 70’s, and I can only imagine that her swimwear will work similar miracles. Her Parrot Diamond Print Bikini, with sandy colors and a geometric print, is so Palm Springs-meets-modern-day-Missoni. Though not all of us look exactly like the model in the picture, the triangle cut and side bottom ties ensure that we’ll at least look our personal best. And, since this suit just begs to be worn to a pool party, I couldn’t help but mention this Tea-Over-Ice Brewing Pitcher, that instantly transforms hot tea into a refreshing cold drink (not to mention in a design that’s pretty enough to leave out on the table).

There’s something I find oddly relaxing about shopping on Friday evenings. While most people are hurriedly getting ready for their nights out, the malls are left empty for wandering souls like myself. Yesterday was no exception, and in an attempt to limit my unnecessary purchases, I decided to stick solely to accessories. This proved to be quite successful, until I passed the Nine West store. In the window practically calling my name, was the Antonela, a platform pump in a Cabernet red. With a peep toe and metal hardware, I envisioned countless outfits for which these shoes would undoubtedly become the focus of attention. And, despite the fact that I bought these in the middle of July, I can’t wait to pair them with white tights for Fall.

Each Summer, I envision myself adhering to a general look, one that usually revolves around flowy clothes, loose hair and earthy sandals. While some might simply coin this as Bohemian, I tend to gravitate towards pieces with just a bit of structure so I never appear sloppy. Tunics fit the bill perfectly and I’m loving all of the elaborately patterned options that have sprung up recently. Since most of the ones I’m drawn to happen to be on the pricier side, I’ve included several of my favorites, all of which are conveniently on sale.

I adore versatile pieces that can just as easily be thrown over white jeans for a daytime barbecue, or used as a cover-up after a day at the beach. My three main criteria for tunics are detailed necklines, ballooned sleeves and a overall slimming cut.
EDIT: For more information on the Shoshanna, Trina Turk and Tory Burch tunics I posted, just click on the pictures!

Gilt Groupe continues to be a wonderfully dangerous obsession of mine, especially after I was recently introduced to Iisli. I had to refrain myself from splurging on this, this and this, and eventually settled on the Pencil Dress, that I got in a cream colored top and yellow skirt (at a much discounted price). I love how it looks as though it’s two separate pieces from the front, but there’s a zipper that runs down the entire back of the dress, which adds a slightly seductive touch. I can’t wait to debut this at work since most of my purchases are strictly for weekends, but I want to make sure it’s still office-appropriate. How would you wear it? I’d love to get your opinions since it’s expected to arrive tomorrow!

My love of gladiator sandals knows no limits, which is why I bitterly await the moment when magazines decide they’re “so last season.” Until that point, I keep all of my pairs in constant rotation, especially my Infinity Sandals, from Urban Outfitters. The tiny studs along the top and the zipper that runs down the heel add a bit of edge, but the nude color tones them down nicely. While most of my gladiator sandals scream for attention, I like how I can wear these with a busy dress (like this Trina Turk) and they won’t steal the show.

There’s no denying that summer has officially arrived. That is, everywhere except the Bay Area. While I was hoping to return to work with a hint of color to my skin, I got to pull out some of the light-weight scarves I’ve been recently buying by the bundles. This Metallic Stripe Scarf was my default the whole time, with a medley of deep blues that complements jeans perfectly and playful tassel fringes. Though I paired it with coats and high boots while I was up North, it will look just as chic worn with a flowy white dress and silver sandals for legitimate summer weather.

Mark Twain once said, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,” which certainly explains why I’ve been weighed down by over sized sweaters and coats my entire trip. This afternoon we headed over to Tiburon, a town just North of San Francisco to have lunch at Guaymas. After we shared a platter of sopes, quesadillas, tomalitas, chalupas and garnacha, we walked along the water’s edge where across the Bay, you could barely make out the city through the dense fog. We then drove up to the Headlands (the area right above the Golden Gate Bridge), and despite the drastic temperature drop, I never get sick of seeing the city from such a beautiful angle.

For some reason, everything tastes better in Northern California. Perhaps it’s the fog that makes a hot pizza that much more appealing, or the abundance of quaint little restaurants like Pizzeria Delfina, for which we made a special trip into San Francisco. With a wonderful assortment of Italian beers, fresh herbs at each table, and Neapolitan-inspired pizzas that are equally crisp as they are chewy, this made for the perfect lunch. But, since no meal is complete without dessert, we walked down the street to Bi-Rite creamery, where we indulged in their homemade Salted Caramel and Mexican Chocolate ice cream.

Tomorrow is the official start of my 10-day vacation spent up in Northern California. Due to some unfortunate natural disasters, however [read: 200 wildfires], my boyfriend and I have yet to determine exactly where we will be staying for the majority of the trip. Since he’s not a native of where I grew up, here are some of the things I can’t wait to share with him:
-Sunset on Mount Tam
-Grilled Ahi burger at Taylor’s Refresher in St. Helena
-Hike in Muir Woods
-Get ice cream at the Bi-Rite Creamery
-Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge (for those of you who have never had the chance, I’ve attached a link for a virtual experience)
-Wine tasting in Napa
I will write intermittently throughout my trip, but I will miss you all and will return with plenty of pictures!

Sometimes I feel as though every trend is taken to the extreme when it comes to L.A. As soon as gladiator sandals became popular, outrageous versions snaked up women’s thighs all over town. And take skinny jeans, for example. While this style does no favors for the majority of women who wear them, we continue to pour ourselves into the tapered legs, hoping they’ll look the same on us as they do on Mary-Kate. But, my favorite illustration, of course, is the fedora. While it’s a very practical accessory, these little hats have completely inundated the city. Though I’ve never thought I could pull off this look, I much prefer the simple straw, instead of the gray or flannel versions. The picture of Michelle Williams is my favorite I’ve seen, with her relaxed dress and plain ballet flats. As always, dELiA’s has a fantastically uncomplicated version, that even I’m swooning over. For only $19.50, the Evelyn Straw Fedora will make for the perfect pool companion, with a black grosgrain ribbon and just the right amount of coverage.

Though I wilt in any temperature above 80º, the onset of warm summer nights is always welcomed. With just flickering candles for light, I love being able to sit outside, sans any kind of sweater. This past Friday, another couple invited my boyfriend and me to their apartment for dinner, and the weather couldn’t have provided a nicer ambiance. After a flavorful salad, pizzas with red peppers and sausage, and a couple of bottles of wine, we broke into my contribution to the meal: cupcakes. They were from one of my favorite little eateries in L.A., called La Provence, that’s home to some of the best cupcakes in the city. Since I couldn’t decide on one flavor, I went with the Red Velvet, Chocolate Ganache, Strawberry and Chocolate. As usual, they did not disappoint.
Even though there are a plenitude of shops dedicated solely to cupcakes, they don’t always provide the best options. Have you had similar experiences or are you sold on places like Magnolia and/or Sprinkles?

Some people are naturally adept at styling hair.
I am not one of them.
From an early age, I was very particular about how I wore my hair, and insisted that my mom recreate the same look for nearly seven years [see above for the beginning of what I call the ‘whale spout’ phase]. To this day, I’m still limited in my options, usually relying on a messy ponytail or dreadlock-like waves. Since I’m still partial to the half-up, half-down look however, this Braid Leather Hair Stick will work perfectly. I love the natural feel of the slightly worn leather and think that even I can manage to maneuver the wooden stick into a somewhat acceptable style.

I’ve been playing tennis for about eight months now, but despite my weekly lessons, I am still far from Wimbeldon. I knew it would be a great way to stay in shape, but most of all, I was tempted by the adorable outfits. I pictured myself running errands in crisp little tennis skirts and sherbet-colored cardigans after early morning matches. I soon learned that such stereotypical tennis gear should be reserved for advanced players only. Lux’s Cable Tennis Dress, however, is a fun alternative, with a vintage-inspired cable knit in all-American colors. With the flattering drop waist and racerback, this dress will be a surefire Ace.
